🇮🇹 Walking Tour of Modena, Italy
I set this tour up as starting in the piazza and working your way out, but you an really do it in any order. Modena's not too big; you can cover the whole thing in an hour if you go straight through at a leisurely pace. Build in more time to go in the Duomo, market, and any museums you may want to check out!
Modena Self-guided Walking Tour
Start your tour in Piazza Grande, Modena's central square. Notice the Ghirlandina bell tower, with the same style clock as in Venice's Piazza San Marco.
The Modena Duomo sits in the piazza. Entry is free and it's worth a quick visit. The side alcoves reflect different styles and eras, and the crypt is somewhat unique for its open setup to the rest of the church.
Did you know that the term "duomo" refers to the largest church in town? So even small towns will have a duomo.
From there, turn right down via Luigi Albinelli to the Mercato Storico Albinelli. It’s an indoor market with fresh produce as well as wine, cheese and other goodies! It’s typically open until 2:30pm most days.
