Amalfi Coast Insider: Hidden Delights

Getting around popular towns like Positano or the town of Amalfi can be frustrating and time-consuming. My family and I decided to get an Airbnb in Furore, which has easy access to delicious restaurants and is central to reaching the places on this itinerary. The Airbnb we picked had a gorgeous view and a much better price (than if we stayed in Positano for instance).

The first day was pretty much taken up by getting from Naples to Furore and settling into our Airbnb, as well as getting the feel of the town.

Perched high above the town of Ravello, Villa Cimbrone stands as an architectural marvel and a testament to timeless beauty. Its rich history dates back to the 11th century, but it gained international fame in the 20th century when it became a haven for artists and intellectuals. This extraordinary location has attracted the attention of filmmakers, with scenes from movies like "The Talented Mr. Ripley", "Under the Tuscan Sun", and even "Wonder Woman" being filmed amidst its captivating gardens and panoramic vistas.

Don't forget to visit the crypt as it's not your typical dark tunnel! A popular wedding venue, the crypt has a breathtaking view of one of the Villa's gardens.

Parking is challenging at Villa Cimbrone. We parked by La Giuliana Di Mansi Marco & C. Snc restaurant (it was closed in the morning when we got there) and then enjoyed the 15-minute walk up to Villa Cimbrone with stunning views of the sea and Ravello.

The legendary "Walk of the Gods" is an exhilarating hiking trail that winds its way along the rugged cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, offering awe-inspiring views of the Mediterranean Sea. This renowned path stretches between the charming towns of Bomerano and Nocelle, providing a unique perspective of the coastline's dramatic beauty. Walking in the footsteps of ancient gods and goddesses, you'll be immersed in a natural paradise, passing terraced vineyards, fragrant lemon groves, and quaint villages that have remained untouched by time.

Normally it takes around 2 hours to get from Bomerano to Nocelle (which is at the tippy top of Positano). But we took a detour in the middle of the path to check out the ancient Convento di Santa Maria a Castro.

Set on a stunning cliff, the Convento di Santa Maria a Castro is a hidden gem bursting with well-preserved art. Inside, you'll discover a captivating collection of religious artwork, from exquisite frescoes and intricate sculptures to breathtaking Renaissance paintings. Each brushstroke and sculpted detail brings to life the rich cultural heritage of the region, offering a unique and awe-inspiring experience for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

By the time you reach Nocelle, you've worked up an appetite. Il Chiosco del sentiero degli dei is a great pit-stop for a delicious drink and a bite before continuing your walk down to Positano. 

Detour to the convent included, it took us around 5 hours to get all the way from Bomerano to Positano walking. From when you reach Nocelle, it's a steep walk down to Positano that can take around 1 hour. 

Once you're in the town of Positano, you can walk around and look at the cute stores and get lost wandering around. At dinner time we went to Le Sireneuse and enjoyed its great food and stunning view of the town and the sea.

Known for its natural beauty and glamorous allure, Capri is a place where it's easy to get immersed in. Stroll along the bustling streets, shop at high-end boutiques, and enjoy a delightful meal at a local restaurant.

Having arrived about an hour early, we got enough time to walk around the town for a bit and see the inside of the Duomo di Amalfi. Once our entire party arrived (we were a group of 6) we rented a boat in the town of Amalfi and sailed from the port there to Capri.

Even though Capri is an unmissable spot off of the Amalfi Coast, the boat trip to get there was the most exciting part for me. Before we arrived, the boatman suggested we swim through the Blue Grotto. Accessible by small boats, the entrance to the grotto is narrow, and once inside, the sunlight passing through an underwater cavity creates a magical blue reflection, illuminating the entire cave.

The iconic Faraglioni rock formations, are not something you see every day. Towering out of the sea, their majestic beauty makes for some pretty memorable photos.

I don't know if it's because of its tragic ending, but there's something magnetic about Pompeii. A tour guide is ideal because there's a lot you'll miss otherwise or will just brush past while you're wandering around this ancient city frozen in time. 

Walking through the remarkably preserved ruins, I could vividly imagine the bustling streets, vibrant frescoes, and everyday life of its inhabitants. From the intricate mosaic floors to the preserved frescoes, exploring the streets and stepping into the amphitheater, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection to the past, making Pompeii an unforgettable and humbling experience.

In the evening after they closed Pompeii we headed to Caiazzo. Caiazzo is a bit of a drive (around an hour from Pompeii) but absolutely worth it. The small medieval town is home to a world renown pizza restaurant, Pepe In Grani

Founded by master pizzaiolo Franco Pepe, the restaurant has gained worldwide acclaim for its exceptional Neapolitan-style pizzas and of course, being on the hit Netflix show, "Chef's Table". Franco Pepe, a fourth-generation pizza maker, carefully selects the finest ingredients, including locally sourced tomatoes and artisanal cheeses, to create his mouthwatering pizzas. The restaurant's commitment to quality and innovation has made Pepe in Grani a destination for pizza lovers seeking an unforgettable dining experience.

Towards the end of the afternoon we walked down to one of the few hidden public beaches left on the Amalfi Coast, il fiordo di Furore. This place is something right out of a Slim Aarons photo--I did my best to imitate his style with my little phone picture above.
