Beginner's Guide to Barcelona
Overview
Barcelona is a beautiful city. It is nestled against the Mediterranean Sea on the east and the Catalan Pre-Coastal mountain range on its west. This makes the city a haven for those looking for some beach and who are willing to get high (in altitude, thank you) for some great views.
I spent five days in Barcelona and I felt it was the perfect amount of time to check off the main attractions, have some time to relax, and take a day trip outside the city.
History
I'm a firm believer that you should have some historical context to a place before jetting over there. It helps you appreciate it all a bit more! Obviously, you could read the wikipedia article written about the city, but it's long. I did, and here are my take-aways for you.
- The city was one a territory under the Roman empire called Barcino (home base at Montjuic!!). It was rather unimportant compared to the rest of the Roman territories in the area. Wine and agriculture were the main source of economic activity.
- Germanic people, then the Moors (Muslim people from North Africa), and then the Franks ruled the city.
