Shanghai North Bund Walking Route

Shanghai North Bund Walking Route

As a local who has lived in Shanghai for over 20 years, this guide will take you along what I consider the most beautiful riverside walk in Shanghai. We’ll start from the North Bund, which is less crowded but more scenic than the Bund, walk through the North Bund Greenland, and take a ferry to Lujiazui to enjoy the stunning night view of the Huangpu River from the best rooftop terrace. However, it’s necessary to note that this walking route is best enjoyed in good weather and outside of the summer months.

Starting Point

I recommend to start the tour at Tiantong Road station of Line 12, you can have a short walk alongside the Suzhou creek, which is a captivating riverside district, blending historical charm with modern urban development.

Just a short walk further, you will find a bridge before the steel Waibaidu Bridge. Though unremarkable at first glance, this spot is a favorite among local photographers for capturing stunning views of Lujiazui.

After making a full loop around the Rockbund area, return to the steel bridge you saw earlier, the Waibaidu Bridge.

The Waibaidu Bridge, also known as the Garden Bridge, built in 1907, is the first all-steel bridge in China and an enduring symbol of Shanghai, representing the city’s blend of Eastern and Western cultural influences. It was once a popular spot to film movies and dramas. Nowadays, many couples will take wedding photos here.

Across the Waibaidu Bridge, there is a historical building on your left.

The Broadway Mansions Hotel, originally built in 1934, is one of Shanghai’s historic landmarks. It was designed by British architects and served as a prime residential spot for expatriates and influential Chinese in pre-revolutionary China. During its long history, the building has witnessed significant historical events and transitions, from serving as luxury apartments to housing foreign correspondents during World War II.

After crossing the Waibaidu Bridge, take a right at the first intersection, then follow the small path to the riverside platform on your right.

* I cannot find the exact name of the riverside platform on the map, Yangzijiang Road is the closet location.

After disembarking, the ferry pier is not far from the Oriental Pearl Tower. If you haven’t visited yet, it’s worth taking a look. Alternatively, you can just walk along the riverbank to the Museum of Art Pudong. Its open-air rooftop is THE BEST spot in Shanghai to enjoy the night view. You can also opt not to enter the museum and simply enjoy the view from the viewing platform on the riverside.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi, I’m Hanying, a Shanghai native. I lived in Shanghai for 22 years before moving to the UK for my postgraduate studies. During that year, I traveled to many European countries and cities, where I not only mastered the art of travel planning but also learned about the various lifestyles and travel customs of each place. Since 2023, China has implemented a visa-free policy with multiple countries, making it much easier for independent travelers. However, having lived in various countries, I’ve noticed numerous inconveniences for visitors to China during conversations with friends. This prompted me to start my TikTok account, where I share travel guides for Shanghai and offer personalized services on this platform. My mission is to ensure that every visitor not only sees the iconic landmarks but also experiences the unique lifestyle of Shanghai, feeling the city’s spirit of inclusiveness and innovation. As a young local and travel planner, I can help you discover Shanghai’s most fashionable, exquisite, delicious, culturally rich, and historically significant spots—far from the standard, repetitive touristy circuits.
