3 Days in Ushuaia, Argentina

How to Get There: No need to rent a car! Take a taxi to the End of the World Train station. While on the End of the World Train you will be able to see the park's stunning scenery and wildlife.

 When we arrived to the International Airport of Ushuaia, we took a taxi to the Hostel. Make sure to ask for you taxi's phone number! There are not a lot of taxis so it will be super useful to have your taxi driver's contact information throughout your stay in Ushuaia. This saved our lives many times! FYI we didn't spend more than $25 (including tips) for our whole stay in Ushuaia.

Ushuaia experiences short days during certain months, notably in May. Other months with shorter daylight hours include June and July. However, these months offer unique experiences like snowfall and winter sports. The best time to visit Ushuaia for longer daylight hours and milder weather is from November to March, during the high season. Keep in mind that during the low season, typically from April to September, some restaurants and attractions may have limited hours or closures.

Be mindful of Sundays in Ushuaia, as many establishments may be closed, especially during the low season. Plan activities accordingly and schedule transportation in advance, as taxi availability may be limited on Sundays. Just a heads up, we visited Tierra del Fuego National Park on a Sunday and arranged for our taxi to pick us up in advance because taxis can be scarce. Another highlight of visiting the park is getting your passport stamped at the post office. If this is on your must-do list, consider planning your visit for a weekday instead of the weekend!

If you're willing to splurge, consider once-in-a-lifetime experiences like visiting Antarctica from Ushuaia. While not budget-friendly, this excursion offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife encounters and exploration. Research and book such activities in advance to ensure availability and make the most of your visit to Ushuaia.

We usually had breakfast at the Hostel but did find these bakeries and cafes very delicious!

1. Glaciar Vinciguerra & Laguna de los Tempanos Trail: 7.2 miles (11.59 km), level of difficulty: hard, 5 hours round trip. No admission fee or permits needed.

2. Laguna Encantada Trail: 5.4 miles (8.7 km), Level of Difficulty: Moderate, 3-4 hours round trip. No admission fee or permits needed.

Wake up early for an exhilarating hike at Glaciar Vinciguerra. This area offers both challenging and easy treks which offer spectacular views of snow-capped mountains and serene alpine lakes. Pick any of the hikes below and plan accordingly so you are not out on the trails after sundown:

After a long day of hiking, relax for a bit and then head to downtown Ushuaia and visit the End of the World Museum to learn about the region’s history, indigenous cultures, and its significance as the southernmost city. 

Day 2: Beagle Channel and Martillo Island

Take a boat tour to the Beagle Channel and Martillo Island from Ushuaia. Witness the iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, explore the stunning landscapes of the Beagle Channel, and encounter colonies of adorable Magellanic penguins in their natural habitat on Martillo Island. 

Most tours depart from the Tourist Port (Puerto Turístico). There you can book numerous different tours as well, so there is no rush to book a tour ahead of time!

3. Laguna Torres del Rio Chico: 8.4 miles (13.5 km), Level of Difficulty: Hard, 6 hours round trip. No admission fee or permits needed.

Wake up early and explore the Tierra del Fuego National Park!  

Once there, don't miss the picturesque Lapataia Bay and the southernmost post office where you can stamp your passport! FYI the post office is closed on Sundays. 

Most popular hike is the Costal Path aka Senda Costera!

This is where RN3 (Ruta Nacional No. 3) ends.

We got super lucky and were able to see three to four whales before when we were heading back to the port! Before dinner, wander through Ushuaia's charming streets and shops as you enjoy the beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the city.

This is a gorgeous, green light alpine late about 15km from Ushuaia. It is one of the most popular hikes in Ushuaia.
