Stellenbosch, South Africa
I learned about this region via TikTok and it was clear during my trip to Cape Town, visiting this area is a must! Only a 45-60 minute drive from Cape Town is this amazing wine region.
Getting There
I opted for renting a car (via Hertz) but you can book private transport or day trip options via Get Your Guide. Once in the area, there is a popular tram that will take you from winery to winery:
Pro Tip: If renting a car, be sure to notice if it is automatic or manual. The default for cars in South Africa are manual and I had to change my reservation once I realized they gave me a car with three pedals.
Where to Stay
I started looking up options on Airbnb of where to stay and fell in love with SO many amazing properties. Most of the vineyards have hotels on site which may be a good resource for you, but I was really into the remote destination kind of vibes. Airbnb has a TON and I even changed my trip dates to stay here:
Little did I know this was much more than an Airbnb - a company who was able to accommodate so much, full gift on arrival, they can arrange food and pizza ingredients for the pizza oven, and I even got a massage on location. I highly recommend!
Where to Go
I have never seen so many wineries in one area, so the options can be a bit overwhelming of where to go. However, this first suggestion is a MUST. I fell in love with this location: Babylonstoren
PS - If you are from the US, you will think the prices for the wine and tasting are unreal. At Babylonstoren I took home a bottle of wine for $5 USD and the full 7 wine tasting (with what seemed like half glass pours) for $5 as well - no wonder they have the tram - one tasting is all it takes!
Otherwise here are a few others I visited (or wish I had time to make it there)...
