I took a bus from Mexico City to Oaxaca solo and dove into the rich culture and it did not disappoint!
The entire trip including transportation, stay, food and activities cost me $150usd!!!
Within 36 hours I had eaten tamales oaxaqueños, visited nearby textile towns and experienced street festivities for día de los muertos.
Here I’ll be doing a breakdown of costs, where I stayed, where I ate and what I did. I’ll also give tips on safety and what’s culturally appropriate.

Recap & Cost Breakdown
Transportation
You can arrive via bus or airplane and I experienced both so this is my take. I took an overnight bus from Mexico City to Oaxaca and flew back out via airplane.
AU Terminal Periferico Oaxaca
@TravelingRosas
The bus from Mexico City arrived at 7am so I walked from the station to the city center which was a 20 minute walk. I would only recommend doing this walk if there is daylight as the area around the bus terminal isn’t the safest.
The bus was really confortable and for $25 I couldn’t ask for anything better.
