🇦🇹 Austrian Christmas Markets: Vienna
Vienna is such a great city! It seems like unless you're really into classical music, Vienna gets overlooked as a destination. But it's a capital city with hundreds of years of history, gorgeous streets, and more palaces than you can possibly visit. It's been home to empires, trailblazers, and dozens of famous artists.
All of that to say: Vienna is a great destination year-round, but particularly magical at Christmasx
Foods to Try
Vienna's markets didn't have a ton of unique foods, but my favorite one was Käsekrainer! It's a Viennese specialty: a grilled sausage made with bits of cheese inside! At the markets it’s served in a hollowed-out roll, and it was so good I ordered it multiple meals!
If you see a wine booth, go try something local! Vienna is a wine region in Austria. The name Wein (German name for Vienna) means wine!
They also have a lot of chimney cakes! These central European desserts are SO irresistible! They’re typically dusted with cinnamon, but you can get it with chocolate, fruit, Nutella, and more!
Another adopted food that's a favorite: raclette! It's local cheese melted over a grill, then scraped over bread or potatoes. Go with the potatoes and thank me later.
