Free Guide: Do's and Dont's to book cheaper flights!

Hello there! You landing on this page tells me that you are (or want to be) a world traveler and are looking for a few tips on how to make those trips a little bit cheaper! I'm Luna and I have been traveling for the past 10 years. After going to university and working for 5 years in corporate life in London, I felt like I really needed a break. So I saved some money, quit my job and bought a one way ticket to Mexico. I have been traveling full-time for a few months now and I want to share some learnings from the past 10 years - this guide will mainly cover ways to find cheaper flights. Keep reading!

Looking for flights to score the best deal!

Don't:

I'm going to start by saying something controversial. Don't use Skyscanner, Kayak, eDreams or any of these "third parties" platforms. Yes, sometimes they have cheaper flights but at what cost? You will have to book through online travel agents.  I have very rarely heard positive stories about these companies, usually if they airline changes or cancel flights you will have to deal with the "travel agent" and it will result in a massive headache! All of this to probably save $30-40.

Do:

Use Google Flights. Honestly, I don't know why it's not talked about more. You go on the website: https://www.google.com/travel/flights and once you input the start and end of your trip you can browse through the calendar showing you prices without even clicking on dates.

Although Google flights also offers "third parties" bookings, it will also give you the option to redirect you to the airline's website. It will come at no extra cost to you.

Don't

This might work for some people and be more challenging for others depending on life commitments but... Try to have flexible dates.

If you HAVE to fly on the 2nd of September and return on the 10th of September, it doesn't give you a lot of opportunities to play around with different flights, companies or options. Sometimes being willing to make your vacation 1-2 days shorter, might result in a substantial saving. Depending on your priorities, it might very well be worth it!

However, if you really can't change the travel dates and the flight looks too expensive, Google flight has this incredible tool to track prices. It will send you emails any time the price of the flight changes!

Do:

Do a little bit of research around the cost of flight. Why is it expensive? Is it high season? Is there a specific event happening? Is there a local holiday you might not be aware of?

Don't:

Don't just book the first flight that comes around. Especially if the trip is a few months away, track prices don't panic buy that flight!

Also, look at what fare you're buying. Bundles can be convenient if you need all the features, but it might very well not be convenient if you only need one extra thing (eg. a checked bag). It might be cheaper to just add what you need.

Do:

Do travel more. Honestly, traveling is such an incredible opportunity to discover new cultures, new flavours and new people!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Female Solo Traveler | Traveling on a Budget Scuba Diving | Outdoors Adventures Hello!! I’m Luna 🌙 and I'm a little addicted to discovering the world, both above and below the water! I mostly travel solo and I'm usually on a budget (the cheaper I can travel, the more I travel!), but I'll invest more money for the right experience (Hot Air Baloon in Cappadocia, I'm looking at you!). In every job I've been at, I was known as the "crazy traveler" - you know that person that lands at 5am on a Monday and is in the office at 9am? or the one jetting off for the 2 days weekend every other week? Or the one that always comes back with some crazy stories? all of the above... it's me! I would like to think I’m quite a curious and adventurous person and I’m always up for trying new things, discover new foods and meet new people. There are not many things I wouldn’t be willing to try and I can’t think of any while writing this. I enjoy exploring new places, discovering new cultures and trying the local foods, but I also enjoy a good hike, a day by the beach and a crazy adventure! I strongly believe I should have been born a mermaid as I absolutely love the water, I’m a scuba diver 🤿 and I’m currently certifying as a free diver 🧜🏻‍♀️ . While I wait for my mermaid tail to grow, I want to see as much as possible of the land-based world. I’m originally from Italy 🇮🇹 but I’ve lived a little bit around California, the East Coast of the US, Barcelona and Scotland before settling in London where I worked in Marketing for 5 years. As of August 2023, I quit London and my corporate life to take a break and travel more, so stay tuned as more and more content will appear here and on my Insta!
