Beginners Guide to Rome, Italy
Benvenuto a Roma
Rome holds a very special place in my heart. It's one of my favorite cities in the world for its food (wine too) and historical sites.
It's also the city where I got married. While it may not be considered a city of love like Venice or Paris, its narrow and winding streets, small and intimate cafes, and lively piazzas put you in a honeymoon state of mind.
Know Before You Go
- You don’t need to pay for water. Rome has public water fountains that's refreshing and tastes pure. The water in restaurants is not free like it is in the US. Take a water bottle with you and fill up when you see a fountain.
- Beware for scammers. A popular scam in Rome is the bracelet scam. Men will come up to you, be incredibly friendly typically ask if your from a country in Africa, put a bracelet on your wrist, tell you it's free, then sell you a tragic story on why they need the money. Trust me, it’s a scam. Anytime you're getting approached just keep walking and pay them no mind. This goes for scalpers too for tickets to attractions.
- Bathrooms and rooms in general are smaller in Europe. This is a shock for most on their first visit. Just remember, you are in a historic city and the buildings are incredibly old.
Must See's
The Colosseo is a staple in Rome. In 2020, they started the underground tours. This tour should be at the top of your list. It's new, it's unique, and filled with history. Book tickets online in advance and as early in the morning as possible to avoid crowds.
This is a beautiful sight to see both day and night. It is crowded virtually 24/7 though. The best time to explore is early in the morning during sunrise to avoid the crowds. However, it's beautiful at night and lit up too. It is surrounded by cafes, shops, and restaurants if you’re in need for some souvenirs or a quick bite.
The Pantheon is a stunning former Roman temple and now catholic church. The dome is imaculate and will exceed your expectations. Be sure to purchase tickets online and in advance.
Must Eat's
This is an amazing restaurant to spend if you want to spend n evening doing a wine tasting and having a trditional pasta dinner and tiramisu desert. I have done this wine tsting and dinner several times and it has not disappointed.
This is a great resturant tucked away from the main drag on the Colesseo and Roman Forum. It's nestled in the tiny streets in the heart of Rome and serves a truly authentic Italian meal that's reasonably priced.
This is a great cafe when you're in need or a quick bite something to eat. We got a pastry from here each morning to go and started out day.
Must Stay
Where you stay in completely depeendent on what you're looking to do while in Rome and how much you're willing to walk. The city is incredibly walking friendly.
My personal preference is Airbnb. Anywhere in the vicinity of the Colesseo and Roman Forum is prime location and is walkable to virtually everywhere in Rome.
My personal favorite place I've stayed in so far is below and is perfect for a couple traveling.
