Exploring the Land of Happiness: A Perfect Itinerary for your Bhutan Trip
As you fly into Paro, be prepared to witness some of the most breathtaking views of the country. After completing the visa process, make your way to the Paro Airport viewpoint, located on the way to your hotel. This viewpoint offers a stunning perspective of Paro Airport, known to be one of the most challenging airports for aircraft to land. If luck is on your side, you might even catch a glimpse of planes maneuvering through the picturesque valley. Trust us, it's one of the most beautiful airports you'll ever see.
Once you've settled into your hotel, take some time to relax before exploring the vibrant Paro market. In the evening, immerse yourself in the rich Bhutani culture by attending cultural programs organized by your hotel manager or cab driver.
No trip to Bhutan is complete without visiting the iconic Tiger's Nest. This religious site, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff, is Bhutan's most renowned landmark. We highly recommend starting your trek around 8 am. The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours, offering breathtaking views along the way. Remember, photography is strictly prohibited inside the monastery, but the view from the hiking trail overlooking the monastery is absolutely mesmerizing. It's fascinating to learn that Tiger's Nest was initially a network of caves used for meditation by Padma Sambhava, the one who brought Buddhism to Bhutan.
After the invigorating trek, treat yourself to a traditional hot stone bath on the way back to your hotel. For a more immersive experience, consider staying in local homestays to get a taste of the Bhutanese lifestyle and culture.
On day three, explore other important spots around Paro. Start your day by visiting the majestic Chelela Pass, the highest motorable road in Bhutan, situated at an altitude of around 13,000 feet. After lunch, head to the National Museum and Rinpung Dzong, which are conveniently located close to each other. From this vantage point, you'll be treated to the best view of Paro city. If time permits, pay a visit to Tamcho Monastery as well.
After breakfast, embark on a scenic two-hour drive from Paro to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Along the way, you'll encounter many unexplored places, each offering unique beauty. Once you've checked into your hotel in Thimphu, indulge in local sightseeing. Begin by visiting the Buddha Point, home to one of the tallest statues of Lord Buddha in Asia. The panoramic view of Thimphu city from this spot is simply breathtaking. Don't miss the nearby nature park, spanning 943 acres of forest area, surrounding the Buddha statue. From the park's highest point, you'll be rewarded with the best view of the Buddha statue.
Wrap up your day by visiting the King's Palace and exploring the vibrant Thimphu market. The next morning, leave Thimphu early and embark on a two to three-hour drive to Punakha. Enroute, make sure to visit the famous Dochula Pass, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the majestic Himalayan mountain range. This pass is a popular spot among tourists due to its scenic beauty and the memorial built in honor of 108 Bhutanese soldiers who sacrificed their lives in a 2003 military operation.
Upon reaching Punakha, head directly to Punakha Palace, another must-visit place in Bhutan. Situated at the confluence of two rivers - Pochu and Mochu - Punakha Palace holds significant cultural and historical importance. It served as the central location for the government of Bhutan until the capital was relocated to Thimphu. The palace's white walls and exquisite wooden exteriors, adorned with intricate artistic woodwork in the interiors, offer a captivating reflection of Buddhist culture and religion. Take a leisurely 15-minute walk from the palace to experience the spectacular view from the suspension bridge, which spans across the river.
If time permits, indulge in some thrilling water rafting in Punakha. It's an exciting way to add an adventurous touch to your Bhutanese experience. On your final day, make your way back to Paro to catch your flight, cherishing the unforgettable memories of this amazing country.
This trip was not only special to us because of its scenic beauty but also because of the warm and generous people we encountered. We loved observing how they lived their lives and embraced their culture. It's no wonder Bhutan is known as one of the happiest countries in the world.
