I strongly recommend making reservations and booking tickets in advance when possible, or at least giving a call on the day-of because business opening hours might vary.

La Tana del Boia

A great little place for a drink (beer, wine, cocktails or local sodas) and a sandwich. The menu changes often but, if available, my favorite is the "Camino" sandwich with raw pork sausage and smoked ricotta cheese. Fresh, locally sourced, raw pork sausage is a common food to eat in many parts of Italy. Other great options include: - "Larabella" panino with fennel-seed salame, sheep's milk cheese and tomatoes; - "Porchetta Mon Amour" panino with roast pork and sheep's milk cheese; - bruschetta (like an open-faced toast) with spicy gorgonzola cheese and honey. Opens at 12:00.

Pizzeria da Felice
@MementoMartina
A historical family business since 1910. Great place for a quick Italian-style "pizza by the slice", but also to try a "cecina", a traditional local dish as "poor" as it is tasty made with water, chickpea flour, black pepper, olive oil and salt. It's like a very low focaccia that is neither too crunchy nor too soft. Also perfect for celiacs.

Gli Orti di Via Elisa
@MementoMartina
Very welcoming restaurant just outside of Porta Elisa in Lucca. Hightened traditional Lucchese menu with tasty and well presented dishes. Excellent service: fast and professional. Very well stocked wine list with a prevalence of local wineries. All the food is excellent, some favorites are: - chicken liver pรขtรฉ, - necci (chestnut crepes stuffed with ricotta), - tordelli al sugo. "Tordelli alla lucchese" are a very rich and tasty traditional first course. They are a fresh egg pasta filled with a mixture of ground meats, mortadella, grated cheese and aromatic herbs. Like all traditional recipes, the filling can vary in many different ways but a constant of the tordello, is supposed to be its classic crescent moon shape and larger size. This pasta is generally searved with a meat sauce ("sugo" or "ragรน"), or with melted butter, sage and Parmesan cheese ("burro e salvia").

Panificio Chifenti

There's an Italian saying that goes: "Chi viene a Lucca e non mangia il buccellato, รจ come se non ci fosse mai stato!" Which translates to: "Those who come to Lucca and don't eat buccellato, is like they were never there in the first place!" So we cannot disappoint. Buccellato is a typical Lucchese dessert that is eaten at any time of the year, but in particular during the celebrations of the "Exaltation of the Holy Cross" and the "Palio della Balestra", which are held in Lucca in September. Buccellato derives its name from the Latin "buccella", meaning "bite". Originally it had the shape of a donut and it was transported from the pastry shop to home tucked into the arm, as if it were a bracelet, especially on Sundays, after Mass. Nowadays the buccellato of Lucca can also have a straight shape, reminiscent of that of a loaf of bread. It's a very simple dessert, enriched with raisins and aniseed, very aromatic and fabulous to be soaked in Vin Santo, a Tuscan dessert wine. The recipe is a secret and every pastry shop makes their own variations. Buy some buccellato at Chifenti and take some back to your accommodation to enjoy the next day for breakfast, dipped in coffee.
