Are you ready to catch some waves or shred some pavement? Look no further than Kamakura, located just a one hour train ride away from Shibuya in Tokyo.
Kamakura
Kamakura is a surfing paradise with a laid-back vibe, incredible nature sightseeing, and sunset views of Mount Fuji. To make your trip easier, I've created a list of all the best places to visit. Perfect for digital nomads, remote workers, or a workation. It's worth going by train for either a day trip or a weekend trip, as one ride costs around 1000 yen.
Upon arrival, you'll find local surfers and skaters all around, as well as happy vibes, foreign boards, and shops where you can rent surfboards. There are plenty of surf shops and schools to choose from. While walking around, you can pretty much surf the whole coast from Chigazaki Beach to Zushi Beach. Chase waves with pretty much everything such as stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, windsurfing, hydrofoiling, as well as kite surfing. On the weekends, it can get pretty packed, so early morning surfing is recommended. You will find fewer people on the west end of the beaches, and be aware of the hawks, they love hunting out of your hands.
Enjoy walking through the bamboo forest and drinking calm tea while watching movies fall. Take deep breaths in nature while escaping a busy city life.
For skating or biking around, you can reach Enoshima Island while walking over a long bridge. Many day tourists come here to enjoy shrines and gardens. You can easily spend a whole day here exploring the steep hikes, food, and stunning views.
While skating or biking along the coast, you will find street and park skaters around.
Get some yummy street food and drinks in the local restaurants.
At a full moon party in the surf cafe, I highly recommend having a sunset dinner with a magical view over the bay. Can you spot Mount Fuji, by the way?
Kamakura is also a great spot to live as a digital nomad, with plenty of garden and ocean view cafes and much cheaper accommodations than Tokyo.
