One day in Albi

One day in Albi

Flávia Marques
Albi is known as "La Rouge" ("The Red One") because of its beautiful brick buildings, most notably the outstanding Cathédrale de Sainte-Cécile. Its ancient History, beautiful sights, and easy access to explore combine to make Albi a wonderful place to visit. In this guide, I share more about the history of this town and the main sights to visit. But please don’t limit your time in the city to these stops: I suggest getting lost and discovering all the charming streets filled with old buildings, independent stores, and cafés in this lovely town.

Getting to Albi

Whether traveling by car or train, Albi is the ideal day trip from Toulouse. I advise taking the train because it is less stressful and ultimately cheaper. The trip takes the same amount of time either way. The train from Toulose Matabiau Gare takes less than an hour, and the landscape is absolutely lovely.

Albi-Ville

Albi has two train stations: Albi-Madeleine and Albi-Ville. Albi-Ville is the best option to visit the historic city center. They’re on different sides of the river, and it’s a long walk from one to another, so you’ll lose a lot of time (and possibly your train) if you go to the wrong train station.

My train tickets cost 14,40 euros and 7,20 euros, respectively. The cost of tickets varies depending on the time of day and typically decreases throughout the day. There’s also a 50% discount for people under 30.

Please always validate your ticket on the orange machines before boarding the train! It’s such an easy thing, and you’ll have to pay a fine if you didn’t do it beforehand. Since it is frequently checked on trains along with the tickets, keep your ID close by.

Albi, Parking Bondidou

Besides being the closest parking lot to the cathedral, this is a good photo spot. Although it is nearly impossible to photograph the entirety of Sainte-Cécile due to its size, you can do so from here. You will probably walk by this spot coming from the train station too.

Albi’s center is very walkable, so I didn’t use any public transportation.
