The amazing vibe of Biarritz

People go to Biarritz to enjoy all the great things that Biarritz has to offer. It is a place for partying, enjoying the sun on the beach and one of the popularest thing: surfing. In the summer of 2022 I came to Biarritz for the first time, and I directly fell in love with surfing and the city. The waves can be perfect for both as beginners and pro's. This year i visited Biarritz again to enjoy the vibe and the beautiful  places of Biarritz again.

As a (budget) traveller I would certainly recommend to stay in an hostel during your stay. Biarritz is expensive, so this is the cheapest and also the funniest way to enjoy your time here;).  When I was in Biarritz I stayed at the surfhostel just outside the city centre.  I have never been in such a good hostel, were you can make friends so easily and where the people are so open to each other. There are surfboards you can take, you can rent a bike, and you can join the hostel group chat, where people can meet and organize activities together. The hostel is around 20 minutes walking from the city centre. There are also free busses going from the street near the hostel to the centre. Check out there rooms and their prices!

In Biarritz there are a lot of cute bars and restaurants to choose from.  It can be hard to find a place to go sometimes. So i will give you some places where I have been and where I had a good experience. First of all the is Le Newquay bar. From the outside it looks good and the people who work there are nice and friendly. It is in the middle of the centre, so easy to visit.

 There is another hostel below the surfhostel called Utopy. The people are   less bonding with each other in this hostel, but if are ok with that, then this would be a fine place to stay. 

You can visit Bar Jean for dinner, but also for clubbing. Late in the evening when the diner is over Bar Jean will turn from a restaurant to a club. Inside there is music and it is full with people who are dancing. The staff will be doing crazy things, and it is free to go in!

Right in the City Centre there is a small cafe where they make delicious bowls. Would certainly check it out if you are nearby!

There are a few clubs in Biarritz where you can dance and drink the hole night. My favorite one is the Play Boy Club. It cost 15 euro's to get inside, but it is worth it. 

On the top of Le Cote Basque beach there is a lovely bar, where you can enjoy the sunset, maybe after a surf session and look out over the sea. Friendly staff and a very nice place to sit.  

For a nice diner/drink evening I would say Palmito Food Market is a very beautiful place. They have different kind of food what you can order, like seafood or Mexican. The tiki bar in the restaurant has also great cocktails. 

Tip: Wear long pants and closed shoes. Especially for the boys! Otherwise there is a change that you can't get in.  I had it one time:/

Another club called Duplex can also be fun, but they really check your outfit, so it is even harder to get in. That one also cost 15 euro's.

Below Cote des Basque are another two beaches which are a little bit further from the city. Marbella and Milady beach. Those are also good for surfing and swimming, but it is better to have a bike or car to get there.

Biarritz has 7 beaches, but not every beach is the same. Miramar beach and Grand Plage are very touristic and very busy on summer days. They are fine for swimming, but I wouldn't surf there. Miramar has a rock in the water where you can swim to and jump off when it is high tide. I would only do it if other people are also jumping at that moment, just to be sure that it is safe. Miramar is also a little less busy then Grand Plage, so I would go there to take a swim. Only between the red and yellow flags, so the lifeguards could keep an eye on you for when you will get drift away, what I one time had:( I got saved, so everything turned out fine:)) In the end of the centre there is a small beach called Port Vieux. It is only for swimming, but the water is the most of the time pretty dirty, so I prefer Miramar. 

The surfing in Biarritz is pretty good. Good waves and a long beach. The only thing is that the water is really busy most of the time during the summer, with local surfers, tourists and surf schools. Still it is very fun to take your board and go for a surf session. There is one beach called Le Cote des Basque beach where the waves are the best. This is the surf beach of Biarritz. If you want to start surfing, there are multiple surfschools on the boulevard of Cote des Basque. They give surf lessons or you can also just rent a board and wetsuit.

A lot of things you can do in Biarritz. Here a few to do tips, with you otherwise never knew of. 

One of them are the horseraces in the Hippodrome des Fleurs. Every Tuesday and Saturday there is a race planned what you can watch and even can gamble on the winning horse.  Normally I am not a fan of animal racing, but this doesn't look that bad, and it looks like they treat the animals fairly. 

Another beautiful place to go is the lighthouse on the end of the Miramar beach. It takes a little effort to get there, but it is worth it. You can buy a ticket to get in there and see the hole city from above.

If you want to have a look around the coastline, there are multiple towns you can visit. Up to the North there is Hossegor. It is a small, but a really cute surfers town. It is also a good place to surf. It is difficult to get there with bus, so the best is to go with car.

Below Biarritz in the South there are a few little towns where you can look around. Bidart, Guethary, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye what on the boarder with Spain. A little further there is San Sebastián. A really beautiful city, and the pintxos (tapas) is so good and cheap, so it will be a good choice for a day trip.

15 minutes from Biarritz there is the town Bayonne. Every year there is a festival: Fetes de Bayonne. It is the biggest festival in France and it is so much fun. Everyone dresses in white and red and the hole town is filled with music and people. The first 3 days are always free, and after those, you have to buy 12 euro's to get in the rest of the days.

I would really recommend to come to Biarritz one time! There is a great vibe and a lot of nice people. You can surf, swim and party! 

This hostel has two accommodations. One outside the city, and one near the beach. But if you want to make friends and do activities together I would recomment the surfhostel.
