When my family comes to visit me in Rome, we always have dinner at Piccolo Buco. Their pizza is something that you cannot have just once. 

While their classic pizzas, like Margherita, are outstanding, I strongly recommend giving a chance to the pizzas topped with less conventional ingredients. This includes one of my favorites - diavola with spicy salami, yellow tomatoes and buffalo ricotta with mint. 

The pizza making process begins with the dough that is left to rise for 48 hours, using Mulino Marino flours, organic sea salt from Brittany, and the Roman water. It is then slipped into a 100 year old wood oven. The result is something that you have to experience for yourself. 

This place is one of those "hole in the wall" type of places that you would pass by without giving it a second thought. But their pizza is one of Romans' best-kept secrets so don't be overwhelmed by the amount of options and people you will see inside and outside. 

Suppli Roma is THE place if you want to grab a slice of pizza (or two ;) on the go and/or try the best pizza marinara in the Eternal City. With its thin crust and spicy marinara sauce, the flavor will have you coming back for more. Guaranteed. 

Pro Tip: Pizza al taglio, or pizza by the slice, is served square or rectangular and cut by the desired amount. 

In addition, here you will find traditional pizza Margherita, toasted pizza with ham, anchovies, zucchini flowers, porcini mushrooms, rughetta and shrimps, olives and pepper, tomatoes and Buffalo Mozzarella, tuna fish and tomatoes. And if that's not enough, they also offer a variety of seasonal pizza options.

I went to Seu Pizza Illuminati right after it's opening and immediately knew that it was going to be a success. This modern pizzeria with cool white marble and slick black finishings opened in the Porta Portese area of Trastevere just a few years ago and instantly had everyone talking about it (a pretty rare  thing for a city like Rome.) 

The pizza menu is divided into “must haves” (like marinara and Margherita), “old school” ( like diavola), and “Seu.” As always, I recommend trying something different and choosing one of the Seu options like Margherita Gialla with yellow pomodorini, smoked provola and mint. Simply delicious! 

Opened half a century ago, Antico Forno Roscioli is a Roman institution. Locals come here for their daily bread, Christmas panettone and of course traditional Roman pizza! 

With just a few basic ingredients they make some of the best pizza Margherita al taglio. Just imagine - thin crispy crust with a sweet and tangy sauce and creamy mozzarella on top. But don't just stop there! Their mushroom and sausage, roasted potato, tomatoes and burrata pizzas are all worth a try. 

Forno Campo de 'Fiori will always be special to me. 

I first discovered this place when I was 19 years old, doing a study abroad program and living in Campo de 'Fiori. When I entered this place for the first time many years ago, I had no idea how legendary it was. 

Forno Campo de’ Fiori serves up pizza al taglio and is famous for it's pizza bianca dressed with extra-virgin olive oil. Simply indicate how much you want of any one flavor and then pay based on weight.
