This four-day itinerary takes you on a hike, to a waterfall and to view several stunning landscapes.

4 Day Itinerary to 
THE LAKE DISTRICT

Start the day early by driving or getting public transport to your starting point – we suggest heading towards the top of the district to Keswick. 

In an attempt to save money, we would also suggest booking an Airbnb with a kitchen. So with that, once you have arrived in Keswick your first course of action is going grocery shopping. Unfortunately, there is not much of an option for supermarkets here, but Booths does the job.

After spending way more time than you had hoped in Booths, you head to your Airbnb to unload the shopping, unpack your bags and have some homemade lunch.

Before you know it, it is mid-afternoon but the day doesn’t stop there as there are three locations nearby for you to see.

First, you want to visit Castlerigg Circle Stone – Roadside Parking.

Then Ashness Bridge – Park @ Ashness Bridge Car Park

and for sunset you want to travel to Surprise View to take in the scenery of Derwentwater - Park @ Surprise View Car Park.

Using your groceries brought the day before, you cook up a full English breakfast, prepare a few sandwiches and head out to Bowness-on-Windermere.

Next, you head to the town of Grasmere to undergo a short hour-and-a-half hike up Helm Crag - Park @ The Lancrigg.

The hike at times is steep but overall, it is very achievable, and for the view you get it is absolutely worth it. The biggest issue you will come across is either the stoney terrain or the weather. When we visited in mid-August it was nice and sunny but very windy. 

Before heading back for a cosy evening, you celebrate with an alcoholic beverage at The Langcrigg, your packed sandwiches and take in the views around you.

As usual, cook breakfast and make lunch before heading out to Ullswater, Penrith to grab the Ullswater Steamer from Glenridding Pier – Park @ Glenridding Car Park.

Today you are going to do one of two things depending on how your legs are feeling and the weather.

You get a return ticket for £22 on the Steamer from Glenridding Pier to Pooley Bridge. This option allows for stunning views while being under protection from the rainy weather. After taking it easy on the boat all day, on the way home you stop off at Aira Force Waterfall – Park @ Aira Force High Cascade Car Park and take in the views from the top. 

You get a return ticket for £13 on the Steamer from Glenridding Pier to Aira Force. This option allows for a boat journey, a hike and a beautiful waterfall all packed into one convenient route. Follow signs for Gowbarrow Trail leading to Aira Force Waterfall – Park @ Aira Force Car Park.

To end the day, you treat yourself to a meal out at Rampsbeck Restaurant – you have done so well eating in you deserve this one!

Wake up early for breakfast, a punctual check out of your Airbnb and one last stop before returning home. With that, you head to Grasmere.

Parking on the roadside you take an hour or so to explore the town including visits to the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop

From here you get back in the car and take a short journey to Rydal Water - Park @ White Moss Car Park to wild swim
