The Layover Slog Repellent
Humble Beginnings
Before we embark on our trip, if you're planning to spend more than a few hours in Jakarta, it's best to arm yourself with the local keys to commerce– Flazz Cards, E-Wallets, Debit, and ol' reliable cash.
What are the local keys, and how do I get them?
Flazz cards
You may or may not have heard of before. They're digital money cards, and are usually used for public transport fees (and sometimes a drink here and there-). While not all shops support payment via Flazz, it's certainly a viable option in a pinch. I'd advise against relying too much on Flazz as the only payment method however. As for obtaining a Flazz card, they are widely available in Indomaret or Alfamart, Indonesia's bona-fide all in one convenience stores.E-Wallets
Likely already a familiar term, E-Wallets are everywhere in this digital age. Indonesia's version of E-Transactions relies on two main apps, GoPay and OVO, both enabling payment via QR (QRIS).
To enable these wallets however, you will in fact need an Indonesian number (+62) to effectively register for the services. How do I get a number you ask? Well- look no further than your local Indomaret and Alfamart. They have readily available numbers to purchase, and the employees will be able to help you set it up to completion. While there, get a snack and set up your OVO/GoPay accounts- you can top up their wallets via Indomaret using cash.
Debit
Debit payments may seem obvious with the existence of Visa and Mastercard, but you'd be surprised at the amount of establishments that only accept cashless methods here. So prepare enough cash, but also an active Debit card for the cashless and bigger purchases.
If you find yourselves in need of extra cash, one can always exchange at a money changer
Quest 1 - Travel
Travel methods are often widely debated, which is better? Cheaper? more efficient? For Indonesia, and Jakarta specifically, there are two major options to consider; Busways, and Grabs. A familiar name in many surrounding countries, Grab is widely used as a mode of transportation. Perhaps you've heard of them in Singapore or Vietnam, Grabs are far easier to estimate than hailing taxis. Payment is available via cash (preferably an exact amount) or the aforementioned E-Wallets.

Quest 2 - A Journey to Remember
The trek to PIK will take time depending on your preferred transport. Using Grab cars, you'll likely make it in 35 to 50 minutes accounting for a bit of traffic, a total cost for about $3 USD per ride. On public transport however, while costs are lower at about $0.60 cents USD maximum per trip, the times shoot up all the way to 2 hours. I'd advise to stick with Grab cars as they're not all that costly on a US budget and much more worth the time.
