Going to Johor Bahru for the weekend is the main personality trait of 70% of Singaporeans. Just kidding. Here's the itinerary that my friend and I used for our most recent getaway to JB!

Accomodation

KSL Resort Johor Bahru City Centre
@singye
This is an affordable no-fuss hotel at a convenient location. It doesn't have the best facilities and is definitely not luxurious but still a comfortable place to rest at for cheap. This hotel is connected to KSL mall and many good eateries which you'll find below in this guide.

Day 1

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory
@singye
You can't go to JB without buying the famous banana cake from Hiap Joo. Be prepared for a long queue (in the sun or rain) to get your hands on these cakes. They are also famous for coconut buns and pork buns. We arrived just before 10am on a Saturday and barely managed to beat the crowd. Don't buy way to many like us as these cakes need to be refrigerated.

Merah Kitchen & Bar
@singye
I really enjoyed this cafe! We tried that lobster bisque and cereal prawn pasta. The food is just okay... But it was fun to check out their unique interior and play their vintage arcade fighter game. Just note that it can get a little hot in here (especially after many rounds of intense Street Fighter).

Nimmies Pastry Cafe
@singye
This is my favourite cafe in JB and I want to gatekeep it so badly. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the cafe), they're not a secret to locals or tourists! From the outside, they just look like any regular cafe, catering to aesthetics and the 'gram. But the pastries and the drinks are genuinely so good. A must-try is their nasi lemak pastry. It has fried peanuts, anchovies, cucumber, egg, and sambal. Itis so unique and executed so well with super crispy pastry. We tried the crab pastry as well which was delicious too but paled in comparison to the nasi lemak pastry. I would CRAVE this nasi lemak pastry and I already miss it... Be prepared to wait for a seat!

Shiba Cafe (Reservation required)
@singye
If you're a dog-lover, or love Shibas specifically, this dog cafe is for you! Personally, I'm more of a cat person (they have one chill grey cat too), so I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of dogs in this cafe. The reservation comes with a drink, and you can buy doggie snacks for extra. (The dogs won't come to you unless you have treats 🤡)

Da Cheng Lok Lok 大成渌渌 (KSL branch)
@singye
Just a short walk from the hotel, you can find this Lok Lok place that opens til late. You can find all sorts of food to deep-fry here. Otah buns, broccoli, Siew Mai. They have a sauce bar too for you to dunk all your fried choices in.

大流芒 Mangolicious (KSL CITY MALL)
@singye
After all that fried food, a little mango shake will really hit the spot. This stall is in the mall near herbal shops as well where you can try some herbal tea to try and smother the sore throat you feel building up from the Lok Lok.

Day 2

Gim Cheng Dim Sum Restaurant
@singye
This dim sum place is a but far out from the hotel, but worth the Grab. You show up and a staff will give you a queue number and help you find a seat. You then go to the front and make your order in the fried and steamed options. Honestly, we showed up without and research and just pointed at whatever looked good. It was all pretty solid, except for the fried banana and shrimp roll. That was a bit weird. Highly recommend getting a pot of Pu'er to go with the meal. (Pot refills are self-service at the hot water tanks.)

Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh
@singye
If you have stomach space after that whole feast, go for some Malaysian Bak Kut Teh. This is a place really close to the hotel so you can roll home after.

Brooos & Co by JWC
@singye
This place serves cool drinks and pastries. It has a chill office concept. Great way to start the evening.

狮城芽笼九巷活田鸡 - JB
@singye
This place sells frog dishes and they're so good. The price is based on the number of frogs per flavour. I recommend getting one of each to try and some porridge. The meat is so tender and the sauce goes so well with the porridge. 10/10, especially for the price.
