Souvlaki

Elvis
@byfoodandtravel
One of Athens' greatest souvlaki is served here. Great souvlaki made with pork, chicken or lamb (as well as kebab and sausage), always freshly grilled, juicy and seasoned with just the proper amount of oregano and salt. It comes with bread, lemon, and a little bit of delicious fried potatoes. Incredibly well-liked by those who frequent the local cafés and bars.

Ηoocut
@byfoodandtravel
Many people were curious about the intentions of five well-known chefs who chose to create a souvlaki restaurant in the heart of the city. A few years later, Hoocut became one of the most well-known locations for souvlaki, so nobody has any questions. In actuality, the chefs made the best possible versions of traditional souvlaki wraps rather than attempting to innovate. The beef, chicken, and pork at Hoocut are cooked in big chunks and then diced finely. You can add a selection of delectable sauces to the pitas for the wraps, which are kneaded and baked on-site.

Kalamaki Bar
@byfoodandtravel
This is one of Koukaki's favourite spots. The meat skewers are little yet delicious, and the meat is of great quality and is expertly cooked. Both locals and visitors love the location. On a summer night, the location's seating area on Drakou pedestrian street is ideal for souvlaki.

The Girls (est. 1977)
@byfoodandtravel
Known as "The Women" (Oi Gynaikes) or "The Girls" (Ta Koritsia), this traditional unnamed souvlaki restaurant in Koukaki's well-known pedestrian strip of Drakou has been serving the same mouthwatering souvlaki with pita for the past forty-five years or so. Every day, gyros, skewers, and burgers are made in-store and expertly grilled. The flavour of pork gyros with pita, in particular, will transport the elderly to the simple flavour of souvlaki in the 1980s and 1990s. The once-local souvlaki restaurant has become incredibly popular in Athens in recent years.

Kostas
@byfoodandtravel
This is one of the most traditional places for souvlaki in Athens whose fame has crossed the borders of the country, and every day a long queue of tourists and locals forms outside the shop. Here, the souvlaki is made with meats that they prepare themselves, potatoes cut by hand, onion and the typical red sauce (don't ask for tzatziki, mustard or ketchup because they don't exist). It is an enduring classic Athenian value.

Lefteris O Politis (est. 1951)
@byfoodandtravel
A few points regarding Lefteris o Politis' souvlaki wrap have not yet been discussed. This location has been serving Athenians its delicious wrapped souvlaki for decades, beginning in 1951. Lefteris has been a consistent value in the Omonia neighbourhood since it was the centre of the city, through the years of complete devaluation and degradation, and now as the neighbourhood is beginning to move in the right direction for a brighter future. The wrap was originally made with lamb, but starting in the 1980s, it was created with a fantastic beef burger (bifteki in Greek). The mix of a juicy burger, tomato, onion, and a well-cooked pita is unusual and delicious. In an attempt to take over the younger demographic, Lefteris just launched a second store on Romvis Street.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Antonis Tsapepas
Like my father and grandparents, I was born in Athens, just a short distance from the Ancient Cemetery of Kerameikos. I therefore regard myself as a native of this special city. These images of ancient buildings from my childhood were perhaps one of the reasons that led me to study archaeology. Archaeology and my passion for Athens thus evolved into a never-ending pursuit of its heritage, neighbourhoods, buildings, streets, flavours, and hidden gems. Through my travel blog (byfoodandtravel.com), I hope to inspire people to adore this city and see it from a different perspective.
