4-day guide to Copenhagen

The perfect girls trip to Copenhagen 

If you want to go to lots of museums, tourist destinations and have unlimited public transport during your stay then you will want to invest in the Copenhagen card. 

Copenhagen is easily a walkable city and I didn't need to use public transport once after I arrived into the city. This will help with keeping the cost down as Copenhagen can be a very expensive city.

There are a few different options for getting to the city centre from the airport. But you can easily take public transport such as the train. The train to the city center costs £3.50 and takes about 15-20 minutes. 

One of my highlights from my trip to Copenhagen was actually a day trip to Malmö in Sweden. This city was so beautiful and had a lovely chilled vibe. This city has the perfect blend of old-world charm and ultra-modern cosmopolitan vibes, this seaside city offers something for everyone. Founded in the late 1200s, Malmö originally belonged to Denmark, only becoming Swedish in 1658.

It is super easy to get the train from Copenhagen central station to Malmö Central Station. I would recommend getting your tickets the day before travelling or getting to the station extra early as it can get quite busy. There are specific machines that sell tickets to Sweden on the left-hand side when you walk in. Or you can also use the generic ticket machines dotted thorughout the train station. The train journey is only a 40 minute journey and costs £22 return. You will also pass over the Øresund Bridge which has lovey views over the sea. 

A great place to head for lunch is Lilla torg. Lilla torg is a compact and picturesque town sqaure full of resturants and bars. Built in 1592 as a market square, the mainly-pedestrianised cobbled square is surrounded by timbered houses and is a great spot for people-watching.

After lunch save yourself some room for dessert later in the afternoon. Only a 10 minute walk away from Lilla torg is the instagrammable dessert shop Sweet spot. 

The Malmö Castle is Scandinavia's oldest Renaissance castle that was alternately owned by both Danish and Swedish forces. The stately fortress now houses various collections under the name Malmö Museer (Malmö Museums). The collection includes old paintings, a gallery dedicated to Nordic art, stuffed animals and torture instruments. 

The city is full of plenty of things to do to keep you busy. From the beautiful church to the beautiful lookout viewpoints.

Renting a boat had to be my favourite activity during my stay in Copenhagen. And I would recommend booking for sunset. We had spotted whilst walking around that there were many boats going by on the canals. We soon sussed out that they were rent your own boats. It was really easy to book online and you were able to take your own food and drink onboard. So if you fancied some alcoholic beverages then you could bring them onboard. There is a safety briefing before getting on the boat so make sure to arrive extra early to allow time for that.

The Round tower is an observation tower built in the 17th century by Christian IV. It was built at a time when Denmark was famous for its astronomical achievements thanks to the astronomer Tycho Brahe. After Brahe's death in 1601, the King built the tower as a way to continue Brahe's research.  

The world's third-oldest amusement park has been delighting visitors to the Danish capital since 1843. Part of Tivoli Gardens' secret is that there is something for everyone. The scenery is beautiful with exotic architecture, historic buildings, and lush gardens. At night, thousands of coloured lights create a fairytale atmosphere that is completely unique.

Danhostel Copenhagen City has 192 rooms and 5 hotel apartments spread over 17 floors and is one of Europe's largest design hostels. The hostel is within walking distance of major attractions, Copenhagen Central Station and the harbour bath at Islands Brygge. The hostel is a five-star design hostel located in the heart of the city and I had a lovely stay here. 

Colourful, captivating Nyhavn is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic sights and one of the locals’ favourite places to enjoy a cold beer on a hot summers day. Originally it was a commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock, today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and restaurants dominate the old port.

 

The Botanical Garden has Denmark’s largest collection of living plants. It’s a free public green space to roam and relax in filled with rare trees, shrubs and herbs. Discover more than 13,000 species across multiple different sections including: Danish plants, perennial plants, annual plants, rock gardens with plants from Central and Southern Europe, and a Conifer Hill, planted with coniferous trees. There is also a butterfly house which is only open during the summer season.

You can also book a canal cruise from Nyhavn waterfront where you can see the lovely houses, ancient castles, and beautiful churches along the canal.

Book tickets to Tivoli

The church of our saviour has some of the best views of Copenhagen on offer. The church itself is free to enter but you do need to pay to climb the tower. The tower is open in 2023 from February 9th until December 31st. Opening hours are daily from 09:00 – 20:00. Numbers are limited to climb the tower due to the narrow stairs and pathways. So during peak season then it is recommened to book in advance. 

If you want an even more impressive experience then you can book a sunset tour of the tower.

Another great hostel option in the Next House hostel.

Rosenborg Castle was built in the 17th Century (origianlly as a summerhouse) by one of the most famous Danish kings, Christian IV. The beautiful castle features 400 years of royal treasures, and the Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia.

Christiansborg Palace is located on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen, which has an 800 year-long history as Denmark’s centre of power. The palace was completed in 1928, but from this place kings and queens have ruled for centuries. Today, the palace is used by HM The Queen for official events such as gala banquets and public audiences.

Christiania is a former military base that was left abandoned for many years before becoming the neighborhood we know it as today. In 1971, a group of hippies broke down the barricades and began squatting there. Nowadays, approximately 900 people live in the area, comprising a community that has its own rules and regulations completely independent of the Danish government.
