Tips for traveling Hokkaido

🔸Hokkaido is a vast island - the second largest in Japan, so if it's your first visit, I would recommend narrowing it down to key regions that you would like to visit rather than trying to squeeze too much into one trip. (Case in point, this itinerary focuses on Central and Eastern Hokkaido, come back for Southern Hokkaido another time!) Especially so if you plan on doing a road trip, attempting too many long drives and driving at night will tire you out and can be unsafe.

🔸As you'll be traversing some rural regions of Hokkaido, I recommend getting a SIM card with a phone line (and not just data) so that you can make phone calls in the event of an emergency. For instance, our car rental company required us to immediately call the police and the car rental company in the event of an emergency (thankfully there were none on our trip!). While many guides out there may suggest that you rely on Skype calls (which tap on data rather than a local number), I've personally experienced long stretches on some drives where my data roaming did not work.

✨Sam's tip: Purchase a SIM card from Mobal, which you can easily pre-order and pick up at a train station in Japan:
