Puglia (eat + drink)

The 'stiletto heel' of the boot, Puglia has slowly become one of the (if not the most) hottest destinations in Italy. I grew up spending my summers and major holidays here, and it's been an absolute pleasure seeing this special region blossom into one of the most requested holiday destinations in Italy. For years it was simply the place where locals came to lay in the sunny beaches for the months of July and August, but now has activities, restaurants and beach clubs open year-round. It's HUGE, so keep in mind it will probably take you a few trips to the region to see most of it. My advice is to not try and see it all in one try, but instead pick one or two areas and slowly explore (and enjoy) them. Here are my favorite places to eat in Puglia

Agriturismo Masseria Barbera
@sophieminchilli
Surrounded by 50 hectars of land, Masseria Barbera's strong point is transforming what the surrounding land gives them into delicious food for their guests. Wine is also very important here, over 200 bottles including many natural options

Antichi Sapori Montegrosso

A little out of the way, but totally worth it. Pietro the owner, grew up surrounded by nature and it shows in his cooking which is rich with vegetables, seasonal ingredients and delicious olive oil

Trattoria "Li Jalantuùmene"
@sophieminchilli
Found this place almost by mistake on a road trip, and I'm so glad I did! Set in a small town in the Gargano peninsula, the owner and chef of the restaurant shows a love and passion for this particular area of Puglia in his menu. Often disregarded by tourists, it was such a special treat to eat delicious food in a beautiful town with nobody else around

Set in Martina Franca’s main square overlooking the Duomo, make sure to grab a table outside when the weather permits. This small bistrot serves simple, delicious food from Puglia with a focus on high quality seasonal ingredients

Mezza Pagnotta
@sophieminchilli
They recently moved location from the center of town in Ruvo to the countryside just outside of town. The food has stayed the same, one of the best and most unique in the region. Mostly vegetable based (for years they only served vegetables, no meat or fish), but recently decided to slowly add some animal proteins that come from local farms and producers. The vegetables either come from their garden or locals who forage in the wild. The menu changes daily and you will never find the same thing twice

Per...Bacco

Right off the Lungomare, this restaurant is a homage to Pugliese cuisine with fresh seafood, local produce and an extensive wine list. Try their Ocrtopus with fava puree and spaghetti con pesto di finocchio selvatico

Il Vecchio Gazebo
@sophieminchilli
Come here to try one of the over 70 gourmet pizzas available. They are served sliced on a wooden board. All the pizzas have a special mix of local and ancient grain flours. Some of my favourites are La Salentina (mixed greens, fennel carpaccio and raw shrimps) and l’alts Murgia (valeriana lettuce, stracciatella from Andria and horse meat carpaccio)

Hi! my name is Sophie Minchilli and I was born and raised in Rome, Italy. I've lived here all my life and about 10 years ago I started a family business with my mom (Elizabeth). We run week-long food tours all over Italy, and when I'm not traveling around the country I am based in Rome where I lead food tours and try as many restaurants as possible. I hope you will be able to join me in Rome for a food tour and if not, this is the perfect space for me to share my Italy knowledge with all of you :)
