Winter Norway 10 Day Adventure

In the Winter, many flee south to escape harsh temperatures and snow flurries. However, I recommend you go north next winter. As far north as you can get! Picture the Northern Lights, Christmas markets, steamy saunas, reindeer, fjords and dog sleds all with a stunning backdrop.

Oslo is your jumping off point for this northern adventure, but it’s a city worth spending a few days in. Full of art, Michelin star food, stunning architecture and active nightlife, Oslo has an exciting cultural heartbeat.

Do NOT miss the KOK sauna boats and SALT for a true Nordic experience!

Board a quick flight from Oslo to Tromsøa and enter the arctic circle! The sun never truly rises in this magical little town on the coast, which means it offers the best shot at seeing the elusive Aurora Borealis. Keep your eye to the sky and book Northern Lights hunting tours with local experts! I recommend staying 2-3 nights here to maximize your chances. It’s a fun town, you won’t mind!

Don’t miss Camp Tamok, where you can try your hand at dog sledding, snowmobiling and more before warming up with reindeer stew in a traditional Sami tent.

Trade snow for rain in Bergen after another short domestic flight landing you in a beautiful yet often gloomy port city dating back to the 1100s. Visit all the historical sites, enjoy amazing fresh fish dishes and hit the pubs with the locals at night. Don’t miss the view from the Floibånen cable car!

From Bergen, take the train to snowy Myrdal where you’ll transfer to the Flåmsbana, one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Cut into the side of the steep mountains that line the fjords, the views are simply stunning. Then, stay one night in the tiny village of Flåm and enjoy a five course Viking plank dinner and a fjord cruise.

Return to Oslo via Myrdal station on day 9 and prepare to catch your flight from Oslo on day 10. I hope you are bringing home lots of pairs of nice Norwegian wool socks to give to your friends!

- English is widely spoken and credit cards are widely accepted. Norway is also extremely safe. The trade off for all these perks? It’s VERY expensive, especially restaurants and bars. Grocery stores are more reasonable.

- Take walking tours in Oslo and Bergen to learn about each city from a local.

- Pack warm layers such as long underwear and make sure you have a hat, scarf and gloves as well as good snow boots. Crampons are a good idea for Tromsø!
