8 Best Things To Do In Beijing, China
If you’re travelling to China, having a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is essential to access most websites and apps, such as Google, Instagram, Whatsapp and Youtube, without restrictions. I have personally used Astrill VPN for years and can highly recommend it for its reliability, fast speeds and excellent customer service. 1. Great Wall of China
Visiting the Great Wall of China is absolutely the best thing to do in Beijing for first time visitors. I booked this tour – transport is included with pick up from the city centre, and the guide explains all of your options. It’s very well organised and I highly recommend it.
2. Temple of Heaven
Temple of Heaven is one of my favourite places in Beijing and a key part of the city’s heritage. Aside from the temple itself, it is surrounded by peaceful gardens where locals gather for tai chi, calligraphy and other activities.
3. Forbidden City
With sprawling courtyards, intricate halls and ancient relics, it is one of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks and one of the best things to do. You can book tickets one week in advance (these sell out very quickly) or foreigners can now take their passport directly to the ticket office on the day.
4. Tiananmen Square
Located just outside the Forbidden City, here you’ll find landmarks like the Monument to the People’s Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. Make sure to check out the daily flag raising ceremony at sunrise!
5. 798 Art District
798 Art District showcases a mix of modern Chinese and international art. I really loved this place, especially to take photos and hang out at the cafes. I recommend going here to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Beijing.
6. Hutongs
This is one of my favourite things to do in Beijing – wander through areas like Nanluoguxiang to explore the charming courtyards, street food stalls and local shops.
7. Summer Palace
A breathtaking imperial garden that used to serve as a retreat for emperors. Take a stroll around the scenic Kunming lake or hike up to the Tower of Buddhist Incense for panoramic views.
8. Universal Studios Beijing
Kung Fu Panda Land of Awesomeness is unique to Universal Beijing Resort, along with Hollywood Boulevard reflecting more local architecture and design compared to its counterparts. For dining options, you can find delicious and interesting local cuisines. I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance and arrive early to make the most of your visit!
