Chinese Fishing Nets
@emilychaudhari
Originally introduced by Chinese traders to the Kochi coastline in the 14th century, these massive fishing nets are suspended from bamboo and teak poles, creating a unique and intricate mechanism used for fishing. The Chinese fishing nets have become a symbol of the city's maritime heritage. The nets are operated manually by a team of fishermen, who rhythmically lower and raise them into the water to catch fish and other marine species.

To visit all of the mentioned places above, the most convenient mode of transportation is a rickshaw. During our visit, we negotiated a deal with a rickshaw driver who agreed to take us to all the sites in a single afternoon for a reasonable fare of just 200 rupees. This allowed us to efficiently explore the attractions and make the most of our time in Kochi.

Kerala Backwater Houseboats
@emilychaudhari
When exploring the backwaters of Alappuzha (Alleppey), there are various boat options available. Traditional houseboats, known as kettuvallams, are a popular choice and offer a unique and leisurely way to cruise through the serene waterways. These boats come with comfortable bedrooms, living areas, and a crew to cater to your needs. For a more intimate and personalized experience, smaller motorized boats or Shikaras are available. These can navigate narrower canals and provide a closer glimpse into the local life along the backwaters. You can also opt for a canoe ride, allowing you to venture into narrower and more secluded water channels, immersing yourself in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Travel Tips

Best time to visit: The ideal time to visit Kochi and Alappuzha is from October to February when the weather is pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities.

Transportation:  Kochi and Alappuzha are well-connected by road, rail, and air. It takes about 1 hour to drive from Kochi to Alappuzha. Cochin International Airport serves as the gateway to both cities. Local transportation options to and from both places include taxis, auto-rickshaws, boats, and public buses.

Mosquito precautions: Carry mosquito repellents, especially during the evenings, as the backwaters and coastal areas may have mosquitoes. I recommend buying Odomos, a great non-sticky mosquito repellent cream that is widely available in India.

Local cuisine: Don't miss trying traditional Kerala dishes such as appam, fish curry, and banana chips.

Accommodations: When it comes to accommodations, both Kochi and Alappuzha offer a diverse range of options, catering to different budgets and preferences. From luxurious hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses, you'll find a variety of choices. When selecting your accommodation, it's worth considering the proximity to main attractions, especially in Kochi, which is a sprawling city. Staying closer to the attractions you plan to visit can save you the inconvenience of traveling back and forth between the newer and older parts of the city.
