The ultimate Rhodes travel guide!
The Rhodes Travel Guide
by Eline Claessen
Last year after graduating me and my mom decided to take a trip somewhere before starting my very first job. After looking around for a bit we settled on the Greek island Rhodes, neither of us had ever gone to Greece so this would be a great opportunity to get to know it!
Ixia
The hotel
We were staying in Ialyssos/Ixia in a hotel called Dionysos. We chose this because it was located quite close to both the airport and the city of Rhodes. In Ixia there are a lot of really big hotels and dionysos was the odd one in the bunch with its smaller size.
We were traveling late in the summer season (the very last week our hotel, and others around it, were open) which lead to a rather empty hotel. There were still a lot op people but nowhere near to what it would be like staying there in July/August. Which I found is a big plus, it was the first time staying in an all-in hotel and i preferred this less busy introduction.
During the week we were visiting there were still activities being organized in the hotel like a showcase of Greek traditional dancing.
The taxi stop was a 5min walk from the hotel, costing only €6 for a drive to Rhodes City. Across the street there is a busstop and walking is also an option but that would take up to an hour. We did it once and it's definitely worth it, most part of it you are walking next to the sea on a road not accessible for cars.
Valentina's Place
Close to the busstop you can find a little beach bar called "Valentina's Place", at first glance it looks very basic but it's worth ordering a drink. You can take your drink from the fridge and when you're paying for it they put you drink in a glass filled with delicious fruits. You can also eat here, mostly Greek food and that tastes very good too.
Mini Golf
On our last day we had an afternoon flight and were looking for some time to kill. We were walking around Ixia and found a mini golf venue. The golfing lanes are not of high quality but it’s definitely a nice activity to do with your friends or family. You can grab a drink at the
Rhodes City
Mandraki Marina
At the mandrake marina you will find a hundred companies that offer boat trips. Trips to some of the other islands like Simi or Chalki, but also trips around the island like to Lindos.
The boat trip we took was amazing but I don't remember which one it was and I cannot find the brochure. If I ever find it I'll post it here.
Due to the sea being a little rough that day and it being the end of the season they changed the itinerary a bit but it was still a lot of fun.
Here are some pictures from that trip.
The Old City Center
The old city of Rhodes is beautiful, take your time walking through these streets and see where they take you. Some areas are more quiet like the picture above, others are alive and buzzing with people.
The biggest shopping streets in the old city are Sokratous and Aristotelous, which lead up to Hipokratous Square. They are definately worth checking out.
At Thomas
We ate Mezze at a place called “at Thomas”, the owners of this nice, little traditional restaurant were super friendly! The food was very fresh and of good quality, would definitely go there again if I ever return to Rhodes.
