This guide is a list of recommendations for a visit to Cape May, New Jersey! It includes general information about the town and how to get there, and food, shop, activity, and hotel recommendations.
Cape May is one of the cutest beach towns on the Jersey Shore! It's a great getaway spot for anyone escaping to the beach. This guide will cover restaurant, shop, and activity recommendations. But first - how to get there:
Cape May - Lewes Ferry
The Cape May to Lewes Ferry runs several times a day during the summer. It has a reduced service during the winter. This ferry is a car and person ferry. If you plan to take your car on it I highly recommend booking a spot in advance. We were unable to take the ferry because we did not book a spot early enough. If you're riding it as a person only then you're likely able to get in day of.
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry offers a scenic and convenient way to travel between Cape May, New Jersey, and Lewes, Delaware, crossing the Delaware Bay. Operating year-round, the ferry transports both passengers and vehicles, providing a relaxing 85-minute journey. Onboard, travelers can enjoy stunning views of the bay, spot wildlife like dolphins, and take advantage of amenities such as snack bars and outdoor seating. It’s a popular choice for tourists and commuters alike, offering a pleasant alternative to driving around the bay, and connecting the coastal communities of New Jersey and Delaware.

The ferry drops you very close to town. For passengers, there is a bus service that will shuttle you into downtown Cape May.
Driving and Parking
We drove to Cape May from Washington, DC. The drive took about 4 hours and was fairly pleasant. Metered parking is readily available using the Park Mobile App to pay. Free non-metered parking is available on nearby streets as well. The free parking can be a bit competitive but you'll be able to find a spot. A few free streets are: Congress Street, North Street, Windsor Ave, Claghorn, West Perry Street, and Bank Street.
I recommend staying put once you're parked. You can use the Cape May shuttle to get around town or Ubers/Lyfts are readily available.
General Information:
Cape May Ave has the vast majority of restaurants and shops in town. This is the center of all activity for the town and from there it spreads out. The Cape May Ave promenade is pedestrian only so it's very easy to wander between shops and restaurants. From there it's only five blocks to the beach. I include more information below but the beach (like most beaches in NJ) requires payment to enter. It's $10 per person and is cash only. They do allow outside food and drinks (not alcohol) on the beach.
Cape May Ave has plenty of free and accessible restrooms. This makes it easy to 1) stay there all day and 2) change for the beach part way through your day!
The main highlights of the town include:
1) Congress Hall Hotel: This hotel was built in 1816 and is America's first seaside resort. The hotel has 5 dining options that are worth visiting even if you're not staying at the resort. We did not stay here but did visit the Boiler Room (fantastic bar for live music and dancing) and the Grand Lawn and Veranda Bar (located outside with a great view of the ocean).
2) Cape May Lighthouse: The lighthouse is located a short drive from Cape May Ave but a staple of any visit to the town. It's one of NJ's historic lighthouses.
Food
The below list is - by no means - comprehensive. It's mostly built on my own experience eating my way through Cape May and my own research. We did not have one single bad meal in town! I've broken up the list below by lunch/dinner restaurants, high-end restaurants, breakfast/brunch restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream places, bars, breweries, and wineries. The majority of the restaurants are in the main area of Cape May but I've included a few - especially among the breweries and wineries - that would require driving/ubering.

I recommend getting here as early as you can! We had about a 3 hour wait for our table and ended up eating our dinner at the bar. It was a beautiful restaurant right on the water and the drinks were delicious. It was definitely an 'Instagram' style restaurant. They had a DJ playing and the vibe was very fun. The vast majority of the seating is uncovered and outside. I do not recommend going if the weather is poor.
