Welcome to Puerto Escondido (= Hidden Port), a town in Mexico that may not be as hidden as its name suggests, but is undoubtedly a must-visit destination! Having personally experienced the charm of this place, I'm excited to share a guide for a the short stay that blends popular highlights with some hidden local gems. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
- Puerto Escondido is divided into five distinctive areas: La Punta, Zicatela, Centro, Rinconada, and La Barra. For a short stay, my focus will be on exploring La Punta and Zicatela.
- While the internet connection can be unreliable in some places, there are several spots where a stable connection is available throughout the year (see Where to work section)
- Puerto Escondido has it all, wildlife (whales, dolphins, turtles...), beautifull beaches, a vibrant nightlife, many activities (yoga, hiking, bouldering...) and amazing local and international restaurants.
- This town is also renowned for its excellent surfing conditions. If you're into surfing or want to try it, this is the place. Zicatela Beach is famous for its powerful waves, attracting surf enthusiasts from around the world, whereas La Punta and Playa Carrizalillo are suitable for beginners aswell.
- ATMs are not abundant in Puerto Escondido. For cash withdrawals, it's recommended to visit the Chedraui supermarket in Centro, here there are several ATMs (= Santander, HSBC etc...)
-- La Punta has a curfew, with everything closing at 11 PM. For those seeking a more energetic nightlife, Zicatela is the go-to spot. It's just a 5-minute cab ride or a 30-minute walk away, providing a different atmosphere after hours.
This is the perfect hostel to meet so traveller friends, they organize activities everynight, give free Shred classes and have weekly family dinners. Bare in mind if you are planning on staying for a longer time that most people going to this hostel love a party and only stay a couple of days
One of the most popular hostels for digital nomads as the internet is always top notch, this selina has 2 pools, many activities beautiful view over the see and gives you the possibility to work from, in the coworking space or just for free in the many spots they offer.

Casa Daikiri: Good location & good for your wallet
If you are on a budget this is a great hostel, there is pool, a chill area and a kitchen and it is well located in Zicatela. However the internet connection is pretty bad.

For more accommodations read my extended guide where I give insides in the other areas, long stay accommodations and more places to eat.
An extremely popular place and for a reason, the food is absolutely delicious and the atmosphere amazing. Insiders tip: try the Taco de camaron con coco and for the healthy choice go for the Salad con pescado, it comes with an asian style dressing and it's all you want with this weather.
Are you on a budget but not in a mood to cook? Go to Dulce Tierra, with good sandwiches like the green one, with cheese, avocado and tomato for $70 (=€3,50) and you get 5% discount if you pay cash.
Very good pizzas! This is a skaters paradise but even with you are not into skating it's a social places, many people go to chill and eat a pizza with a beer.
Probably one of my favorite places in Puerto Escondido. This market has an incredible view over the Pacific Ocean with chance to spot whales. There are normal food stands but also amazing places to eat like a Birria place, this place should be on your must-go list.
This is really a hidden gem! While most places are on the coastside of the highway, this place is on the otherside a family business, homemade sourdough bread and beautiful porcelain. A must go!

An absolutely beautiful beach and most go, the stairs to get to this bay are not a joke mainly on the way back be prepared, it is also always pact but it's really worth it.
Not for the late night party as it closes at 11pm, just like everything in la Punta. It has very good cocktails, on Friday and Saturday there is always a DJ and many people start there night here around 9PM.
Are you in Puerto Escondido on monday and in a party mood? Go to Blue Monday at Cactus, this is the place to be!
