Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria

Hannah Wachenheim
Part of my best small towns around southern Bavaria that are worth the stop, I have to kick it off with my personal favorite, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Situated at the base of the German Alps, under the tallest point of Germany, this little gem is a must-add to your itinerary! I lived here for two years and can't wait for you to fall in love like I did! Below are some of my favorite parts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen with where to eat and things to do and see. 1hr & 10 min drive/1hr & 15min train from Munich

Where to go:

Partnachklamm - scenic gorge open year round, weather depending

Marienplatz - pedestrian only street with shops, cafes, and restaurants (Garmisch)

Ludwigstrasse - pedestrian only street with shops, cafes, and restaurants (Partenkirchen)

Zugspitzbahn - Mountain railway & cable car that takes you to the highest point in Germany

Riessersee -a small lake tucked away with views of the mountains

Eibsee - a crystal clear, alpine lake with views of the Zugspitz. Ideal for swimming, hiking, lounging or renting a paddle board or peddle boats

What to do:

Rent a bike (or ebike!) and explore the town and the surrounding area

Hiking - Kramerspitz, Alpspitz, Wank & so many more

Take a leap off of the mountain and enjoy a tandem jump for an incredible experience with even more incredible views

Winter - the mountains come alive with skiing and snowboarding- make sure to check out all the different huts up on the mountains for food and a bier!

Catch a SC Riessersee ice Hockey game

Where to Eat:

Mukkefuck - the turkey breast sandwich is something I still dream of

Wolpertinger - authentic, filling Bavarian cuisine

Bollywood - taste of Indian food, looking for a break of Bavarian food? You can't go wrong here!!

La Toscana - another favorite, this Tuscan-Italian restaurant is worth the taste. The onion soup with a sourdough bread dome is another favorite

Lodge Am Hausberg - my personal favorite spot for schnitzel. The menu has a variety of schnitzels with different toppings, my favorites were the Napoli and the nacho! Also, check them out on Wednesday where they have "cheap schnitz night"

Hobis Backstube - bakery, a favorite among locals and expats alike. You HAVE to get there early!

Wildkaffee - enjoy a coffee while planning out your day

Where to get a drink:

Peaches - an American favorite, especially on Tuesday's when they have Dollar Night. On these nights, they'll accept American dollars and even have specials on drinks! Make sure to pop by the pizza window and get yourself a slice!

Music Cafe - a night club attached to Peaches that is a great way to end your night

Pub 33 - another favorite among the Americans. Enjoy great drinks and music in the comfort of a pub
