There are many definitions of Bologna in Italian. It’s defined “la dotta”, “the learned”; “la grossa”, “the fat” and “la rossa”, “the red”.

La dotta because it is in Bologna that the first university in the world opened in the XI century.

La grossa because of the amazing food you are going to eat here, from tortellini to the amazing ragù, known everywhere in the world with the name of “bolognese sauce”.

La rossa because of the color of the buildings in the city, all red and orange; and of the terra-cotta roofs.

They day starts from the train station, you can reach Bologna in 1hr from Milan with fast train, about 2hrs from Rome.

Exit the station and cross the square, you will just have to walk straight ahead after the crossing to find yourself in Piazza XX Settembre. With the ancient Porta Galliera on one side and the old Castello Galliera across the road.
