Esquiline Hill
Verso Ministries
This route will take you to all the jewels of the Esquiline hill, one of the traditional “seven hills of Rome,” that lie within the ancient walls. The Esquiline rises up to the northeast from the valley where the Colosseum sits. The area has been inhabited since the 6th century BC.

🚌 Getting here
The Termini and Repubblica metro stops are near the start of this tour. Bus 70 and 71 also come very close to Santa Pudentiana.
By starting at Santa Pudentiana, we are starting at the beginning of the Church in Rome.
Often overlooked, this is one of the oldest churches in Rome (you can tell because you walk down to it-- Rome is a city of layers!). Senator Pudens (2 Timothy 4:21) was one of the first converts to Christianity and friends with Peter. This basilica was built over his house, an early worship place for the Christian community.

Santa Pudenziana was the daughter of Pudens, and with her sister Prassede, used to run into the Colosseum to sop up the blood of the martyrs, then run out before being caught. You can see the well here in the church where they would hide these relics.
The apse mosaic is one of the earliest in Rome and is one of the first examples of the 4 Evangelists being depicted by the symbols (lion, ox, man, eagle)
In the first chapel on the left (often locked) there was a Eucharistic Miracle that took place.
If you walk around to the left of the main altar, there's a chapel with a piece of wood under the altar - this is a piece from the table where Peter celebrated Mass. The other part is in the main altar of St. John Lateran.

Continue up the street to find one of the four Major Basilicas– the largest church dedicated to Mary in Rome and probably the oldest: Santa Maria Maggiore.
