Maldives - Myth buster Guide!
1. Maldives is soooo expensive
Yes it is. The private islands are expensive and can cost from $1000 to $5000 for 5 nights excl. flights and internal transfers. HOWEVER, it doesn’t have to be so expensive if you’re looking for a great beach and water sports experience. There are great options under $1000 for 5 nights at a beach front hotel. Another element that adds to the spend is sea plane transfers. You can avoid that by staying closer to Male and taking speed boat transfers. You’d get the tiny islands view while arriving or leaving from Male anyway, provided the flight is during the day time. If you’re staying on island resorts, go for full board or all-in meal package. Again, full board is better because the drinks options are not enticing. Another way of reducing the overall expense is to reduce the # of nights in water villas, just in case. The beach villas are equally good and enjoyable.
2. Maldives is only for couples
Not entirely so. The beauty of the islands, water villa accommodations and beaches has attracted newly wed couples more than any other kind of travellers. HOWEVER, there are plenty of things to enjoy as a family such as water sports, beach games, local cuisine, scuba and snorkelling. I saw families on private islands enjoying the sun and water while on my honeymoon. In fact, Siyam resorts have a floating water park for every age group to enjoy. What’s more, kids upto a certain age stay free. So bump this beach paradise up on your list
3. There are restrictions because it’s a Muslim country
Yes, wearing bikini in public places and drinking alcohol is prohibited including importing it. HOWEVER, it’s not restricted on private island resorts. So, get your favourite outfits and enjoy the islands.
4. Sea planes are must-do
P.S. I spent 5 nights at Thulagiri Island Resort. It’s a beautiful island accessible by speed boat in 20 mins from Male.
