Cinesala
Cinesala is good for artistic films with a little bit of comercial appeal. With a bar and open piano its nice to get there a little early just for the fun of it. it's calm it's good for introverts too!
Honestly my favorite in this list... hahaha
It's very close to the subway station, a good choice if you are using public transportation.
Petra Belas Artes
Petra is more of a pop cinema, with various simultaneous rooms, they have sessions with more comercial selection but still have the classics and alternative indie films
Very good location, next to the subway station, the avenue its is located in is very noisy thogh. Next to the Paulista Ave, its good last stop of a afternoon walk in the avenue.
Itaú augusta
More of the comercial type but it has alternative film festivals' sessions frequently. Nice bookstore inside. Surrounded by the local night life. I'd sugest a pizza by piece and a beer across the street and then head to your seats inside. ;)
Cinemateca
Very indie alternative historical and experimental film selection. Special screenings with open air at night. Has a big garden good for small picnics. Themed selections and projections in original 35mm and 16mm. international and brazilian films. Very quiet and not crowded.
Not that good if you're depending on public transportation but you can get sorted.
Cinemarquise
Great undergound (literally) rooms in a historial and archtectural mark in the city, the Conjunto Nacional. Located in the Paulista Ave. it is in the street/galery level, next to a big bookstore where you can explore while you wait for your movie to start if you arrive a little early
