Immerse yourself in the vibrant city of Galway
With its lively atmosphere, traditional pubs, and bustling markets, Galway offers a wealth of attractions. To learn more about the city's history and important personalities, let's begin our exploration by visiting the Galway City Museum, which is very close to an important historical landmark: the Spanish Arch.
After visiting the museum, take your time to walk "The Long Walk" and stroll to the Latin Quarter and Quay Street, place where you can find shops, pubs, restaurants, and watch performers on the streets.
If you want to learn more about Galway history and important facts of the city, visit the Saint Nicholas Church, the Medieval Heart of Galway. If you're in town on a Saturday morning, you can't miss the weekly market: Food, crafts, and loads of goodies.
You might find Lynch's Castle a bit disappointing if you expect all castles to be large and fairytale-like. This castle is located in the heart of the town and currently serves as a branch of the local bank. Still worth a visit to admire the details of the building and recall the stories you've learnt about the Lynch's family and legacy.
One of those interesting stories is recorded on Lynch Memorial Window - read the message on the wall, close to the top window.
More Experiences
The Eyre Square has a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was once a market site and was formally gifted to the city in 1710. Today, it remains a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors, especially on sunny days. It's a nice place for "people watching".
Galway Cathedral was a great surprise for me. It's beauty brings peace to the eyes of the beholder - take the time to admire the stained glass, mosaic, and pipe organ. A gem of architecture.
The Riverside Soundwalk is one of those relaxing walks. You can start or finish at the Cathedral. Along the way you'll find information boards containing history and facts of the place. It's a very pleasant and easy walk.
Another option for a chill walk is the Salthill Prom, but don't forget to kick the wall - a local tradition to bring good luck.
Another experience worth trying is a stroll through the Claddagh village, one of the oldest fishing villages in Ireland, and a visit to the Heritage Centre and Museum located in a traditional cottage at the heart of the village.
Eat, Drink & Enjoy Trad Music
Galway has loads of dining options. Some well-known and overpacked, especially during the high season. It's easy to find a good "craic" and trad music in town.
