Budapest Thermal Bath

Budapest Thermal Bath

One of the reasons to book a trip to Budapest is to visit the city's spas. Historic and always an integral part of the life of the city and its inhabitants, they are a must among the things to do in Budapest. According to estimates, there are over 1000 natural sources of spring water throughout Hungary and 125 thermal springs are located just below the city, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 75°C. I have created a useful guide to Budapest spas to absolutely try.

Gellért Thermal Bath
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
The Gellert Baths are for me the most beautiful in the city and are worth a visit if you are in Budapest. Inside an Art Nouveau structure, you will find 10 swimming pools in a beautiful environment decorated with mosaics, ceramics, stained glass windows and statues. The Gellert Baths are a historic Hungarian thermal bath in operation since 1918, in reality there are testimonies of its miraculous waters since the Middle Ages. Although they are part of the Hotel Gellert, they are also accessible by external guests, through a separate entrance. Inside the Gellert thermal baths there is also the possibility of using, for a fee, further services: ranging from massages to treatments carried out with mud therapy. Inside the structure there is a buffet restaurant, a dental clinic, a solarium and beauty services such as a hairdresser, beauty centre, manicure and pedicure. 👣How to get there: reachable on foot from Cittadella (200m, 3 min) Metro stop: Szent Gellért Tér, Line M4. 🎟️Ticket cost: full price 37€,children up to two years old enter free

Széchenyi Thermal Bath
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
The Széchényi Baths need no introduction as they are the largest and most famous in Budapest. Built in neo-baroque style in 1913, they are the most beautiful spa complexes in the city. These spas are housed inside a wonderful neo-Baroque style building and can be used all year round even outside, thanks to the large swimming pool with hot water. Entering a pool at 9pm at 37ºC, when it's freezing outside, is something priceless! Obviously there are many wellness treatments, from massages to saunas, including all body treatments. 👣How to get there: reachable on foot from Heroes Square (600m, 8min) Metro stop: Hosök tere, Line M1. 🎟️Ticket cost: weekdays from 7,100 HUF (€17.15), weekends from 8,200 HUF (€19.80), various treatments for a fee 🚨Being the most famous spa in Budapest, if you don't want to risk very long queues or even a full house, book in advance on the link I provided.

Rudas Baths
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
Their origins are very ancient, and today they still shine as in the past. The Rudas thermal baths were built around the second half of the 1300s during the occupation of the Ottoman Empire at the behest of the Buda Sokoli pasha near Gellert Hill in Buda. Even today inside the establishment it is possible to admire elements dating back to that historical period such as the central hall with the large octagonal swimming pool covered in red marble. The Rudas spa is a real institution for Hungarians. 👣How to get there: reachable on foot from Gellert Thermal Bath (800m, 12 min) Tram stop: Rudas Gyógyfürdo, lines 19,41,56 and 56A. 🎟️Ticket cost:from 10 to 20 euros based on the options you choose.

Lukacs Baths
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
The Lukàcs baths, or the Baths of San Luca, have very ancient origins: they date back to the 12th century when the baths were built next to the monasteries to treat sick people. In 1884 Fülöp Palotay decided to purchase the entire structure, making it a spa centre. The structure is a true work of art that has maintained its original beauty dating back to that period: in fact, the marble plaques left as a sign of gratitude by the sick during the Middle Ages can still be admired today. 👣How to get there: Tram stop: Margit Hid, Lines 4,6,17 and 19. 🎟️Ticket cost:about 22€

Irgalmasok Veli Bej Bath
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
Another wonderful sixteenth-century Turkish bath is the Veli Bej baths, little known even to the inhabitants of Budapest. This spa has a maximum number of visitors per day, which ensures you never find too many people. They are not the most beautiful spas in Budapest, but they are still fascinating, perfect for those looking for an intimate atmosphere. 👣How to get there: reachable on foot from Lukàcs Bath (200m, 3min) Tram stop: Margit Hid, Lines 4,6,17 and 19. 🎟️Ticket cost: daily entry costs 2800 forints, approximately €8.00

Useful information

The ideal is to bring with you a towel, slippers and change of clothes to use after the shower. In some bathrooms the service is complete, so you will be provided with everything you need.

However, in most spas, excluding those of large hotels, the service is essential, it is advisable to be equipped with everything necessary to place in the safety deposit boxes. There are no restrictions on men's swimwear: shorts, boxers and briefs are all allowed in Budapest's thermal baths.

Finally, you can also bring a bathrobe like real Hungarians do.

If you are planning a trip to Budapest, but don't know where to start, this guide is for you!
