Chasing the Lighthouses from Boston to Portland

Chasing the Lighthouses from Boston to Portland

Seeing all of the lighthouses we could find was the focus of this trip, but we found so much more along the way. Flying into Boston, Massachusetts we made our way along the coast all the way to Portland, Maine. We stayed five nights and six days exploring all of the nooks and crannies we encountered. Lighthouses were definitely found and loved, but excitedly so was a fort built in the 1600's, a local bar with ties to a tragedy as well as part of a movie, a fabulously, politically incorrect tour, and even stayed in a witch's house. You will find all of these in this guide and so much more. Lighthouses, restaurants, tours, and oh my gosh, the best donuts you will find anywhere. This was an incredibly fun trip. I also include many of the photos I took at each place.

Nubble Lighthouse
@rhondaglisson
This lighthouse was so beautiful especially with the waves crashing against the rugged rocks. There is no access to the grounds or the lighthouse itself but amazing photo opportunities are certainly there. Construction was completed in 1879. Plenty of parking was available but very busy. They have a nice little gift shop you should stop by.

Cape Ann Light Station/Thatcher Island
@rhondaglisson
The best way to photograph these two towers is from the water like we did. There are tour companies that offer boat trips, but we saw it during our whale watching trip. Thacher Island, is located one mile east of Cape Ann, near Rockport and Gloucester, and consists of about fifty acres of exposed rock. You can camp and visit the island. I am including a link to a good website with great info on the history and how to make contact for camping and visiting.

Salem, Massachusetts
@rhondaglisson
Salem was so much fun and filled with an incredible amount of history. There is so much to do in this unbelievable town. If you're wanting lodging while you're there be sure to check out the Airbnb I've shared in this guide. The host, Hope, was wonderful. The room we stayed in had a Harry Potter theme. The whole house is filled with talented artistry.

Amazing Airbnb in Salem, filled with very eclectic artistry.  Hope, the host, is wonderfully warm and inviting. Be aware though, this house has VERY steep stairs up to the rooms.

Annisquam Harbor Light Station
@rhondaglisson
Sadly I have just found out that you can no longer access this lighthouse as we did from a nearby neighborhood, but you can still get great pictures from across the river at Wingaersheek Beach. You can also take a water tour to get some up close shots. If you can get here for sunset you will not be disappointed. I will include a link with info that says you could take your chances for a great beach shot? I think it might be worth it.

Fort Constitution Historic Site
@rhondaglisson
Built in 1632, this was a cool, small fort. There are some really interesting structures still standing and you have access to a wonderful lighthouse. The history throughout this entire area is phenomenal.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am a traveler who loves to research and a researcher who loves to travel. I spend untold hours, days and even weeks researching my next destination. I pick destinations that peak my interest--most are ocean or wildlife related. One was taking off to Churchill, MB, at the bottom of the Arctic Circle, for the annual Beluga Whale migration--all by myself. That's just me, I do most of my traveling solo. I also love photography and have my camera with me every step of the way. I spent most of my life living in Georgia, but now I live in the gorgeous Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.
