Back when I did Exchange Study Programme to Kanazawa University, Japan, I managed to visit a lot of places. A weekend retreat, when I managed to visit most of the places in Kanazawa itself, was Shirakawa-Go, located in Gifu prefecture.

Let me tell you why Shirakawa-Go should be at the top of your list! This enchanting village, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses and offers activities that are perfect no matter the season. Here are some fun and engaging recommendations:

1. Explore Traditional Gassho-Zukuri Farmhouses

These iconic, steeply thatched-roof houses are a must-see in every period season of your visit. They're designed to withstand heavy snowfall and are open year-round. You can tour several of these farmhouses, unlike the most overrated one, Wada House, I recommend you go to houses like the Kanda House and the Nagase House, to get a glimpse into the unique architecture and rich history of Shirakawa-Go with a less crowded and no-rush ambience.

This is the best alternative Open-house Showcase if the Wada House appear to be crowded. I have been there myself, it is much better to mesmerising the stunning view and take your time as long as you wanted. Affordable entrance ticket too!

2. Hunting-Stamp Village Walks

In Japan, travellers can participate in "stamp rallies," where they collect unique stamps from famous places like temples, shrines, and museums. Participants get a stamp book and collect stamps at each location they visit. It's a fun way to explore different attractions and learn about Japanese culture. Take a leisurely stroll through the village while you can see many unique stamps in almost every place with their unique mascot. Also, soak in the stunning traditional architecture and beautiful landscapes. Whether it's lush and green in the summer or covered in a magical blanket of snow in the winter, the village is picture-perfect all year round.

List of places where you can get Stamp like above:

3. Doccorasho Cafe

4. Kodajin Souvenir Shop

5. Many more!

3. Enjoy Local Cuisine

Foodies, rejoice! You can savour local specialties like Hida beef, mountain vegetables, and river fish at the village's charming restaurants and eateries. Every meal is a chance to taste the unique flavours of the region, making it a delight no matter when you visit. Many vegan option also provided!
