Okinawa, Japan
Nicole Wright
Okinawa, Japan holds a huge piece of my heart. The culture is absolutely incredible, and the people are so selfless. I have fallen in love with this place. Navigating this unique culture was a little intimidating at first but definitely worth it!! After multiple visits myself, I hope to be able to help others feel confident in navigating this incredible journey.
Okinawa is a small island off mainland Japan. Think of it as “the Hawaii of Japan”. Beaches galore, shopping, and great food! The sea walls are fascinating to me.

Ryukyu Glass Takumi Kobo
@nicolewright
This place is a glass shop that lets you blow your own glass. You get to choose what to make, the color etc. I was slightly worried about the communication barrier, but the staff knew just enough English to keep me from messing it up! It is truly a craft, and I enjoyed watching them make several pieces. I was very pleased with how my rocks glass turned out. Now it is a beautiful piece of art on my shelf 😊

Orion Breweries, Ltd. Nago Factory
@nicolewright
Orion is THE beer of Oki. Brewed right on the island and available everywhere. Orion merch is also available everywhere. One of my top 3 favorite beers of all time. Ask a local to sing you the Orion beer song! So catchy but I have no idea what the words are 😂 Warning: you will get hooked on this beer and it is rare that I see it in the US. 😕

Sesoko Island
@nicolewright
My sister in law grew up on this island and she brought us here on our last trip. This island is beautiful!! I would probably stay on the island on my next trip. It is very small and quaint with a few hotels on the beach. There is a bridge connecting this island, so no need for a ferry like some of them require. The beaches here are gorgeous!!

kokusai street east entrance
@nicolewright
Street with lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. I loved checking out the little boutique style stores. This is a great spot to try Habusake- Okinawan sake that has a poisonous snake in it. 😱

MEGA Don Quijote Uruma shop
@nicolewright
How do I get a Don Quixote in the US?! Gosh I love this store. It is HUGE and full of the most random stuff. They have literally everything. If you can find it on Amazon, you can find it in here. Block out some time to puruse. You’ll find interesting things in every aisle.

Arashi
@nicolewright
My favorite spot for fried rice and ramen! The fried rice is served in a skillet while it’s still cooking. WARNING: it will destroy fried rice in US. It’s just not the same for me anymore. The ramen is also delicious and it’s culturally acceptable to slurp the noodles as loud as you want. 😋
When you enter the restaurant, you order on a machine that looks like a vending machine. It prints a ticket that you take to your table. Your server will pick up the tickets, then bring you your order.

Tokashiki Island
@nicolewright
This island reminded me of something from a movie. You have to take a 35 min ferry ride, and watching the rock hills get closer and bigger as we rode across the bluest water was incredible. Once the ferry docked, we took a shuttle bus across the island to Aharen Beach. It was a beautiful ride through jungle with glimpses of the bright blue water. The beach had massive rock formations and a cave we explored. It took some planning to get there, but it was worth it if you love nature and unspoiled beaches! The cost for the ferry was around $20 per person.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicole Wright
Seriously addicted to travel.

I love to experience the culture of an area. Whether it’s a US city I’ve visited over and over or a remote village in a foreign country, my goal is to dive into the local life and see what adventures I can find. I have a strong appreciation for the uniqueness every single place has to offer. I love nature and tend to focus heavily on finding the coolest spots on the planet.
I do 100% of my trip planning/booking and tend to plan the next vacation while I’m still on a vacation. Watching a plan come together perfectly is one of my favorite parts of a trip. And when it doesn’t come together, sometimes those are the best adventures. I love to give recommendations and help others experience new cultures.
My trips vary from short to long, with or without kids, all inclusive resorts to backcountry tents. I like to keep things moving, yet still leave time for an ample amount of relaxation.
I have an infinite bucket list. The more I see, the more I want to see. 🌎
