Big Bend National Park is a really special place. It is rugged, remote, and beautiful. It is important to plan properly for trips out here. The park is big and the drives between spots can be long (but completely stunning). There is no cell service in most of the park, it is extremely remote, there are very few services available, and the nearest hospital is almost two hours away in Alpine. Don’t let this deter you, though! By planning ahead, you can have a safe and memorable trip to my personal favorite National Park!

Depending on where you’re coming from, I recommend filling up your gas tank in Alpine or Presidio before heading into the park. There is a gas station at Panther Junction, but you’ll be paying a pretty penny per gallon.

All recommendations are accessible via 2 wheel drive high clearance vehicles. Check the notes for more info on each recommendation!

Where to Stay

Chisos Basin Campground
@ramblinroundtexas
If you’re trying to pick between the campgrounds available in the park, the Chisos Basin campground is my favorite. Not only are the views amazing, but being up in the Chisos Mountains gives you cooler weather than down in, say, the Rio Grande Village. Plus, some of the best hiking trails are up in the Chisos, making them easier to access! Check out the photos on Recreation.gov and do your best to get a site with a shade shelter! It makes all the difference during the warmer months. Book your reservations early because this campground fills up! I like to set a calendar reminder for the day my travel dates become available (usually 6 months in advance) and snag the sites as soon as I can!

OR

Chisos Mountains Lodge
@ramblinroundtexas
A great alternative if you aren’t into sleeping on the ground. Still directly within the park with easy access to trails, but with the benefit of having a real bed! Book early, especially for holidays!!
