Bucharest’s food scene

Bucharest’s food scene

Ana Ionescu
I am a person who loves slow traveling, loves eating where the locals eat, and I have good taste when it comes to food. I am also tired of all the bad tourist places that are recommend all over Google and by tour guides. I often see on YouTube or TikTok tourists who come to Bucharest and are sent by food guides to tourist traps where the people from Bucharest do not eat and where the ingredients are of poor quality. So I decided to present you my take on Bucharest food. Expect a lot of local ingredients, in-season ingredients, delicious dishes, and amazing stories. This guide will be divided into Lunch/Dinner Places, Brunch Places (here I have some incredible recommendations), and Places with Romanian food (authentic restaurants that offer local and in-season ingredients). For all the places I added their Instagram account as I believe this is the quickest way to see how the dishes look like and to find their website for reservations.

Lunch/Dinner Restaurants

PAPILA
@anaionescu6
Papila is a special place because in one bistro you can have 3 different experiences. Go for lunch and you’ll have incredible soups with some delicious sandwiches. Or go for dinner and have a Parisian experience with Romanian flavors. Or my favorite but quite hard to book, a ramen Sunday where you’ll have one of the best ramen you have ever tried with absolutely everything made in-house. Remember to book a place in advance as the location is small and very loved by Bucharest people.

balls.

When I tell you you can’t miss this place, you really can’t!! Absolutely beautifully done comfort food, you’ll leave this place full and happy as a child. Please order dessert as well and also order the cauliflower nuggets, they are something else. Balls is famous for their meatballs, a staple in Romanian houses, but trust me, their meatballs are better than anything I tasted before. Also, very cool vibes.

arzu

Local ingredients with a twist, again another place for good comfort food. Great for lunch/dinner or if you want a brunch without the usual eggs and avocado. Also, great sweets and specialty coffee. The concept is close to Ottolenghi’s.

M.A.T Restaurant
@anaionescu6
This is my favorite restaurant in Bucharest, and if you have the chance to try it, then you’ll understand. Best tacos I had, and I lived in Barcelona for the last couple of months. I tried most of the “best tacos” places, and they can’t reach the level of MAT. Again, all the ingredients are local, even the maiz for the tortillas is cultivated by them here in Romania. No reservations, so be prepared to wait in a queue.

buoni e bravi
@anaionescu6
Great pizza by slice, for me the best in Bucharest, and you’ll understand once you try it, great ingredients. Pay attention; they are only open Monday to Friday until 5 pm, so it's great for a quick lunch.

MOM Bucharest
@anaionescu6
Great for dinner, great dishes. It's not Romanian food or necessary local ingredients, but it has great execution. Also, great wine selection. New address: Bulevardul Regina Elisabeta 28, București 050017, România
