This itinerary is for people who have experience in the wilderness and know their limits. Please carry water and be aware of weather conditions, etc. Wear closed-toed shoes and a hat/sunscreen.
Before your trip, check road conditions for the dirt roads you want to travel, and make sure you bring a vehicle that can handle it, even if you have to rent one.
If road conditions aren’t right for you to drive yourself, or if you prefer to go with someone, look into California Overland.

If your car doesn’t have the necessary tech to get out to the viewpoints ( i.e. 4WD is necessary, but you’ve got 2WD), check out a tour with California Overland. They’ve got some great options.

Day 1
If you’re coming in via Montezuma Valley Road, stop in Ranchita at the Yeti market (aka Montezuma Valley Market) - they’re re-establishing after a fire. Maybe pick up some beer or wine for your first cocktail hour in town to celebrate the start of vacation.
Montezuma Valley Market
@travelingengineer
This is a cute little neighborhood market with interesting choices. The people there are trying to build community, and it’s fun to take a picture with the Yeti.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Traveling Engineer
Available for hire
I’ve lived in California my whole life. I’m an engineer (so was my late husband). I’m very detail-oriented and an extreme introvert. I’m known for planning fabulous adventures, and look forward to helping others plan the best trip they can have.
I like adventures, stargazing, hiking, solitude, and food. The people I hike with most frequently know I’ve usually got trail beers in my Camelback for the halfway point (in addition to a full water bladder). My favorite hikes offer something unexpected or spectacular.
