ICELAND: 6-day hike in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
HORNSTRANDIR NATURE RESERVEÂ
Hornstrandir is the most remote place you can be in when travelling to Iceland. It is located right above the West Fjords, and defines the northernmost peninsula of the country. In addition, this region is very close to Greenland, so close that in some occasions polar bears have stepped in Icelandic territory floating in drifting icebergs!Â
It sounds a very exciting place to visit (and it is), but hiking to this nature reserve is not something that you should do spontaneously. If you want to explore this area, you should be well prepared, with good equipment, clothing and lot of knowledge about the territory.Â
It is important to add that the average distance between each campsite is from 8 to 12km (unless you are adventurous and take detours as we did on the 4th day, when we walked 6km extra).Â
But don't worry, if you don't feel safe enough doing this just by yourself, you can always join a tour company like Borea Adventures. Â
Safety is primordial when hiking here, because of tough weather conditions, lack of mobile coverage nor civilization. There are just few Summer houses in some points of the peninsula, that's all!Â
So get ready, pack your backpack with the essential, pick up your tent, and start hiking to the most pure, wild and remote region of Iceland!Â
