Gems of Northern Ghana - Map + Itinerary Suggestions
Tamale
Recommended Stay: 2-4 Nights
Tamale, Ghana’s Northern capital and its third-largest city, may not have the sleek look of Accra or Kumasi, but it’s a place where culture, arts, and tradition run deep—and it’s growing quickly.
While many travelers pass through Tamale on their way to Mole National Park, it’s well worth lingering here for a few days if you can.
At a minimum, make time to visit the National Cultural Center, and if you’re lucky, catch a rehearsal by the Tahma Cultural Troupe. It’s a captivating way to experience local arts in motion. You can check out Tahma Troupe's YouTube channel below.
The heart of Tamale is easy to explore on foot, and yellow-yellows (tuk-tuks) make it simple to zip around town.
To experience the artisan workshops or the Chief’s Palace, a guide is essential. Luckily, I know just the person—my friend Abdullah is an incredible local guide who knows everyone and everything here.
