Getting to Culebra!

This is one of the first, and biggest, mistakes that I see people make when they visit the island - it can truly end up being the make or break of enjoying your time in paradise or being miserable - so pay close attention:

Your Two Options: Ferry or Flight

I. Ferry

Getting to the Ferry

Uber: Skip the rental car hassle! Uber offers rides directly to Ceiba from most locations (including San Juan) for a transparent fare.

Taxi: Reliable and convenient, especially for small groups (this should be around $75 from San Juan Airport for up to 4 passengers). The ride typically ends up taking around 50 minutes.

Public Bus: Budget-friendly, but requires a transfer and can be time-consuming (around 1.5 hours). Buses are available from San Juan to Fajardo, where you can then catch a short taxi ride to Ceiba.

Rental Car: This one is self explanatory; details about parking are highlighted later in the itinerary.

Attached below is the terminal location:

Tickets

Same-day purchase: Tickets are also available at the ferry terminal if you are unable to purchase online tickets, or miss your ferry. If this happens to you, try to arrive early to the terminal to purchase tickets for the next ferry.

Ferry Types

Passenger ferry (fastest): Takes about 45 minutes, carries passengers only. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this option for those who are prone to seasickness, as it tends to feel much more of the affect from waves.

Cargo/passenger ferry: Takes slightly longer, allows passengers and cargo (including vehicles). Since the cargo ferry is much larger, it is the better option for those who may get seasick. It may be worth it to take this option if you are unsure as well - better safe then sorry!

Parking

There is fairly limited parking at the terminal. If you are driving, consider using a paid off-site parking lot with shuttle service to the terminal (around $15/day). Do not park on the roadside- you will get a hefty little ticket.

II. Flying into The Island

Airlines

San Juan Isla Grande Airport (SIG): This small airport offers an extremely quick connection to Culebra with a flight time of around 30-35 minutes. However, if you're flying into SJU, you'll need to take a short taxi ride (around 15 minutes) from the main terminal to Isla Grande.

Ceiba Airport (RVR): If you prioritize the shortest flight, Ceiba Airport boasts the closest proximity to Culebra. Flights from here take only 15-20 minutes, making it a great choice for those looking to minimize travel time. However, Ceiba itself is a MUCH smaller town with fewer amenities compared to San Juan. In addition, the prices from this airport are also not much better than the above options, so if you're not staying near Ceiba, this is likely not the best choice for you.

Getting Around the Island

Rental Cars

Pros

Freedom & Flexibility: Explore the island at your own pace, discover hidden gems off the beaten path, and visit secluded beaches inaccessible by taxi.

Spontaneity: Stop for photo ops, detours to charming local shops, and spontaneous adventures.

Cost-Effective (for Groups): If you're traveling with a group, splitting the cost of a rental can be cheaper than multiple taxi rides.

Luggage & Groceries: Easily transport luggage from the ferry or airport, and stock up on groceries without relying on taxis.

Cons

Driving Conditions: Roads can be narrow, bumpy, and unpaved in some areas. Consider a Jeep Wrangler for better handling.

Rental Availability: Rentals, particularly Jeeps, are limited, especially during peak season. BOOK IN ADVANCED.

Taxis

Pros

Convenience: No need to worry about navigating or parking. Relax and enjoy the view.

Less Stress: Leave the driving to someone else and avoid the responsibility of a rental car.

Cons

Limited Availability: Taxis are scarce, especially outside tourist areas. Scheduling rides in advance might be necessary.

Restricted Exploration: Your exploration is limited to areas serviced by taxis. You might miss out on hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints.

Cost: Multiple taxi rides can add up quickly, especially for longer trips or unplanned detours.

Golf Carts

Pros

Budget-Friendly: Often significantly cheaper than a rental car, especially for shorter stays.

Fun & Breezy: Experience the island in a unique and open-air way, perfect for sunny days.

Easy to Park: Golf carts require minimal parking space, making them ideal for crowded areas.

Environmentally Friendly: A more eco-conscious way to explore compared to traditional gas-powered cars.

Cons

Limited Capacity: Typically seat 2-4 passengers, making them less ideal for larger groups.

Weather Dependent: Heavy rain or strong winds might limit enjoyment and safety.

Terrain Limitations: Not ideal for off-roading or very rough terrain - reaching certain beaches may not be possible.

The Verdict

For the ultimate freedom and flexibility on a budget, consider a golf cart rental, especially if you're traveling with 1-2 people and plan to stick to paved roads. It's a fun, eco-friendly way to explore Culebra's charm.

If you crave a bit more adventure and have a larger group, a rental car, particularly a Jeep, offers more freedom and capacity. However, be prepared for potentially higher costs, especially during peak season.

Taxi may appear to be the most convenient option, but limited availability and cost can make it impractical for extensive exploration.

Additional Tips

Consider shared taxi tours offered by some local companies for a guided exploration experience.

Airbnb

Pros

Cons

Less predictability. Amenities and services can vary greatly between Airbnbs. You might need to handle chores like cleaning or manage check-in procedures yourself.

The Verdict

Ok this one really is up to you, however, while vacation rentals have their perks, I always recommend checking out Culebra's hotels first. Locally owned and operated hotels often reinvest profits back into the island community, supporting local businesses and initiatives. Plus, hotels typically employ local residents, further strengthening the island's economy. Soaking up the sun while giving back – sounds like a win-win!
