Discovering Perugia: The City Center's Treasures
Did you know that Perugia is older than Rome? Here is a bit of history before we start:
Perugia's history can be traced back to the Etruscan civilization, which existed in Italy before the Roman Empire. The Etruscans established a settlement on the site of present-day Perugia around the 6th century BC. They built walls and fortifications to protect their city.
In the 3rd century BC, the Romans conquered Perugia and incorporated it into their expanding empire. Under Roman rule, the city experienced growth and development. Roman roads, bridges, and public buildings were constructed, contributing to the city's urbanization.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Perugia, like many other Italian cities, went through a period of turmoil and invasions by various barbarian tribes. In the Middle Ages, the city began to take on its characteristic medieval appearance. Defensive walls, fortifications, and medieval architecture, including churches and palaces, were constructed.
Perugia was under the influence of the Papal States for much of its history. The Papal States controlled the city during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, leading to the construction of various papal buildings, including the Rocca Paolina fortress.
