Have you ever dreamed of chasing the Northern Lights, cruising through majestic fjords, or strolling along charming cobblestone streets? That was me. I spent a little more than two weeks exploring Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in the dead of winter (late Jan - Feb), and let me tell you—it was nothing short of magical. Coming from a tropical country (Indonesia) and being so far away from Scandinavia made this a trip of a lifetime, so believe me when I say I tried to make the most of every moment in the 16 days I was there.

I’ve crafted this guide to share my itinerary and the tips I wish I had known beforehand. From where to find Aurora Borealis to snagging cozy second-hand Norwegian sweaters, this is the kind of guide I hope makes your Scandinavian adventure as smooth and unforgettable as mine.

My Essential Tips for Winter Travel in Scandinavia

Best Time to Go

The best time to chase the aurora borealis is between November and March, but it’s better to avoid the polar night period (late November to mid-January) when daylight is minimal. While the darkness might seem ideal for aurora viewing, limited daylight can make outdoor activities challenging, and cloudy weather is more frequent during this time.

Interestingly, contrary to common belief, aurora activity peaks during the spring and autumn equinoxes (March and September) due to geomagnetic conditions. However, the longer, darker winter nights and snowy landscapes create a magical atmosphere perfect for aurora hunting. For a balanced experience, plan your trip between late January and early March when there is more daylight, clearer skies, and plenty of winter activities to enjoy alongside your northern lights adventure.
