Okinawa Island Vegan, Vegetarian, Organic 🌱

The best of the best places for a health-conscious foodie. Okinawa has its fair share of vegan, organic, vegetable-focused restaurants but they definitely aren't all equal. This is a shortlist of my favorites ones!

Shizen Inu Vegan Cafe | 自然いぬ
@maricaramina
The best vegan restaurant on the island. The food and desserts are equally tasty - you can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

Natural food and snack mana
@maricaramina
Vegan restaurant with a rustic interior. The food is delicious but be sure to save room for dessert.

Kintsubo Shokudo | 金壺食堂
@maricaramina
Vegetarian (mostly vegan) Taiwan eatery that's famous for it's cheap breakfast buffet and chimaki rice balls. The store itself is understated and nothing special but the flavor of the food will surprise you. If you don't have time for the buffet, pick up some chimaki for a breakfast or snack on-the-go.

Rotton | 六屯
@maricaramina
Vegan cafe offering breakfast + lunch with ample outdoor seating. Go early as they tend to sell out of their most popular dishes!

Surya Shokudo | スーリヤ食堂
@maricaramina
The best South Indian food on the island. The owner is a wizard with spices and makes everything herself so don't expect a speedy lunch - but the wait is well worth it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mari Caramina
Hi, I’m Mari! I live between the US and Japan and have called the beautiful island of Okinawa home for the past 4 years. Okinawa has 47 inhabited islands and I’m on a mission to travel to all of them - 28 down, 19 more to go! I’ve also traveled extensively across Japan and lived in Tokyo for over 10 years. Japan is a wonderful country but can be difficult to navigate with the language barrier, especially if you’re interested in diverting from the usual tourist path. No two travelers are the same - I can help you build an itinerary that’s just right for you so you can make the most of your visit to Japan! My guides consist only of places that I've actually been, so rest assured they are properly vetted and aren't just compilations of popular locations. I live a low waste, natural, mostly plant-based lifestyle to honor this planet that sustains life and my travel style reflects this. I prefer to travel slowly while experiencing culture through food and non-touristy activities centered around unspoiled nature. I'll venture into a metropolis every once in awhile but I'm usually itching to escape by the end of day 7 (how I managed to live in Tokyo for 10 years is a mystery). If this sounds like a style you align with, I look forward to hearing from you!
