10 Must-Do Things in Prague

Upon arrival in Prague, I asked a local what the top three things I had to do in Prague were. Other than the typical, Prague Castle and Charles Bridge, she said, "You must find a bakery and make it your own secret oasis." And I could not agree more. 

1. Watch the sunset over the Prague Castle 

The Prague Castle is an iconic symbol of Prague. Not only does it house the President of the Czech Republic, but it also holds the world record for the largest ancient castle totaling approximately 753,473 square feet. It stands about 1,870 feet tall and is visible from many parts of the city. 

Many tourists hike up to the castle for sunset and have a perfect view of the city. Although this is also a great way to spend your evening, the best view is actually on the opposite side of town. 

In Prague 2, there is a large park called Riegrovy Sady. The park contains a beer garden and a perfect view of Prague Castle. 

Simply walk around the fence that surrounds the runners track in the middle of the park. Once you reach the western side, you will find a slope of grass with tourists and locals alike, waiting to watch the sunset over Old Town. 

Vítkov Hill is a place with lots of history. From battles to cultivation, Vítkov has played a role in several important events in Czech history. 

Now, the hill is home to the third largest bronze rider statue in the world, the Ceremonial Hall, multiple exhibitions, including one titled 'Crossroads of Czech and Czechoslovak Statehood,' and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 

Although quite a trek to get to the top, the view is worth every stair. The hill offers a view of almost the entire city of Prague. 

The statue of Jan Žižka, who defeated Catholic forces led by King Sigismund in 1420, stands high above and is beautifully complimented by the large Czech flag flying high above the city. 

Your trip to Prague isn't complete without this unique view of the city. 

3. Grab some unique pastries from a local bakery 

Prague has hundreds of local bakeries and coffee shops that each offer their own unique recipes. In fact, Prague has so many different cultures mixed through the city, that you will often find different cultural foods and recipes to try! 

My favorite bakery that I found is called Honeymoon Coffee and Cake Shop. They sell a wide variety of foods, from breakfast to dessert, but they are most known for their honey cakes.

Not only is the food absolutely amazing, but the atmosphere is so welcoming and an amazing place to spend an afternoon. 

The Cafe is owned by a family from Israel who just recently immigrated to Prague and opened the shop only seven months ago. The recipe for the honey cakes comes from their Russian grandmother and has been carried on through the generations.

10. Visit one of the dozens of farmers markets 

Prague has a nightlife for every day of the week. Actually, back in 2018, Prague was considered to have the second highest density of bars in the world, with consideration to the population (roughly 392,000 circa 2018) and number of bars (roughly 198). 

You won't struggle to find a place for beer, cocktails, or dancing on any given night. However, organized pub crawls are a great way to see the city and get VIP access to a lot of the exclusive clubs in town. 

Prague has a famous Five Story Club just a block down from the Charles Bridge, and many of the pub crawls end the night with VIP entrance there. 

In terms of alcohol, the majority of pub crawls give you unlimited free drinks at the first club, then a free welcome shot at the rest, and you can always buy more from the bar if needed. 

(Just be sure to read the reviews... I attended one that poured us "shots" that were 10% vodka and 90%water) 

Pub crawls are also a great way to meet people. Not only are you in clubs/bars with hundreds of other guests, but the guides for the pub crawl are often super social and love to get to know everyone. It's a great way to get a locals insight and just hear some amazing stories from around the world. 

La Forme has some of the best Croissants I have had in all of Europe... and that includes France. 

Not only are they flaky and buttery, but they are also super creative. The pistachio croissant topped any other food I had in Prague. 

The Café sits in Prague 6, nestled into a quaint neighborhood. The atmosphere is quiet and charming, complimented by a small terrace outback. 

The terrace is shaded by a lush layer of trees and the little garden makes drinking your coffee just a little bit better. 

The food is actually a dream. If the picture of the pistachio croissant isn't enough to convince you to try La Forme, I don't know what will. 

Dog Bar is an underground club where you can enjoy live music, drinks, and a unique atmosphere. 

The entire bar consists of various different rooms, all with different purposes and themes. One room has live music, another has some foosball, and another has tables for sitting and eating or drinking around. 

Upon arrival, you pay a cover charge of around 250 CZK (around $11 USD). IT IS CASH ONLY! So come prepared with cash, not card. With this money, they give you a plastic card that you can then use to buy drinks throughout the night. If you run out of money on the card, you can always add more. 

The base cover (250 CZK) gets you about two cocktails or a cocktail and a shot or two. It varies on what you purchase. 

But the coolest part about this bar is the design of the walls and the usage of space. 

In many rooms and hallways, you will find ladders that lead you into rafters. You can climb around and sit up in the rafters, giving you a bit of space from the crowds. In the foosball room you will find more ladders that are almost like bunkbeds. Cavities are spread throughout the bar making it much more interesting and adding space for sitting and talking. 

According to others there is also a massive dog that roams around the bar. However, I never saw him in my time there, so this could be complete rumor. 

If you're looking for a unique clubbing experience, Dog Bar is an absolute must. 

Now this applies to everywhere in Europe, but Prague in particular. Prague is considered one of the most walkable cities in Europe, and it isn't for no good reason. 

It only takes a few hours to explore both the lesser town and Old Town. 

There is so much to see and even if you walk the same strip everyday for weeks, you will still find something new every time. 

The cities walkability comes from the original city builders.  

The city is placed in a valley split in half by a river. Luscious green hills surround both sides. Due to the hills, the city builders were forced to make streets narrow and buildings compact. 

Most of the major landmarks of Prague - The Charles Bridge, The dancing house, Old Town Square - are all on the flat level of the valley and within no more than 15-20 minutes from each other. 

Some landmarks - The Prague Castle, Petrín Hill, Vítkov Hill - are more of a hike and sit on the hillsides. Nonetheless, the hikes are 100% worth it and still take no more than 30 minutes to get to. 

In fact, Prague is so walkable that the metro is considered slower than walking above ground. So, strap on your walking shoes and don't forget to look up. All of the most interesting things are up. 

The typical activity requires a hike up Petrín Hill and exploring the grounds, including climbing the Petrín Tower. Although all of that is great, I have a different recommendation. 

Prague is known for its beer. Specifically, really cheap beer. It's no joke when people say a pint of beer is cheaper than water. 

It is almost an aesthetic to drink a beer and stare at a beautiful view. 

Letna Beer Garden allows for just that. 

Located in the Letenské Sady park in Prague 7, the garden is its own green oasis overlooking the city. 

On top of Letna Hill, you can see a panoramic view of the entire city, including an amazing view of the Vltava River. 

The menu is refined but affordable and quite good. 

They serve several beers on tap including Pilsner Urquell, Kozel Dark Lager and Gambrinus. Aside from beer, you can also get cider (my personal favorite and an absolute must-try), wine, a few hard alcohol options, coffee and soft drinks. 

They also serve a limited variety of food options. 

Beer prices ranged anywhere from 35-45 CZK, or about $1.45-1.86 USD). However, note that the concession stands where the drinks and food are sold are CASH ONLY. 

The seating is open and there is plenty of space to spread out underneath the canopy of trees and string lights. 

Any time of day the view is incredible, but I cannot recommend enough that you spend at least one sunset here. The lighting is spectacular and there is nothing better than watching the sunset with a beer (or cider) in hand staring at the gorgeous orange skyline of Prague. 

Prague is home to dozens of farmers markets, new and old have been held in practically every quarter since 2010. 

The markets offer fresh and local produce and products - vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy, pastries, etc. However, it isn't just ingredients and shopping products. you can also find some amazing freshly prepared food, coffee, cocktails, juices and more. 

Many stalls cook up foods right on the spot in front of you. The best quesadilla I've ever had in my life came from a tiny stall at the Náplavka Waterfront Farmers Market. 

Aside from amazing food and lots of produce, you can also find handmade crafts, vintage clothes and jewelry and tons more. 

Most of the markets run from March to November. Every market is different in terms of hours. Some run only once a week, some are only open on weekdays, others only weekends. 

The most popular market is the Náplavka Waterfront Farmers Market which is located along the Vltava River on Saturdays only. On any given day of the week, this pathway between the Palackého and Railway bridges is the spot to be. With vaults in the walls of the river bank - originally used as ice storage - have been converted into house shops, cafés and bars. 

All of the farmers markets are accessible by public transportation or walking. I recommend waking up early on Saturday morning and making your way down to the river bank for a coffee and amazing homemade pastry. You might even get some live music to complete the morning! 

At the base of the hill is a funicular that will take you to the top. A public transportation ticket is required or you can purchase a ticket at the base for 24 CZK ($1.10 USD). 

Take the funicular and save your energy for the hike down the hill instead. 

Explore the gardens - The Petrín Tower, the Mirror maze, Rose garden, etc. - but then find your way to the path down. Take a left at the Tower and follow the path through Stahov Garden and Promenáda Raoula Wallenberga. Eventually, you will reach the street Úvoz. Follow it down until it becomes Nerudova. You can either choose to continue down the street and eventually reach the Charles Bridge and Old Town or you can climb up to the Prague castle. 

The views from Promenáda Raoula Wallenberga are absolutely stunning and considered some of the best views in all of Prague. 

The garden is amazing to walk through and incredibly peaceful. The street that you eventually hit is fully of history and absolutely stunning. 

You can even reward yourself with a delicious chimney cake after your long day of exploring and walking, as there are multiple chimney cake shops on the way down the hill. 

Take a nice stroll and enjoy the bright colors of the garden and the streets, taking the time to soak in all the beauty that Prague has to offer.
