This unique city located in Tasmania, an island state at the southern most point of Australia, has a rich history. Spend your time learning about its past and the incredible wildlife, whilst enjoying great cuisine and modern culture at the same time. Make sure to reach to top of Mount Wellington for epic views of the city.

It's a great destination for a solo traveller to explore a city and meet other adventurers before heading into the landscapes and nature that Tasmania is famous for!

Things to Do

Get to know Hobart by taking a self guided tour around the streets of Battery Point. Viewing some of the oldest buildings in Tasmania. This allows you to get a feel for the city and an understanding of the colonial settlement.

🎧 Listen along to the free audio tour linked below.

Head along the waters edge and you will reach the Tasmanian Museum and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Perfect for an afternoon, click below to find out more.

Day trips near the city:

MONA
@claralindsay
Museum of Old and New Art is a must see when in Hobart. Its eccentric exhibitions will keep you intrigued for hours. Also check out the wine bar and daily outdoor live music while you are there! How to get there; the public bus from the city centre is a cheap option at $3.50 each way taking 40 minutes. Get on at bus stop A1, Elizabeth st. Or Mona offer a ferry ride up to get views of the city and museum from the water, $28 return. Museum entry ticket is $38AUD.

Port Arthur Historic Site
@claralindsay
This UNESCO world heritage site holds the ruins to one of Australias most famous convict Penitentiary's. Explore the old prison, church, hospital and much more. The entrance ticket includes access to the site, complimentary talks and a 20 minute harbour cruise. Which I would recommend doing as part of your day! This is a full day experience as the drive from Hobart is about 1.5 hours. Pennicott wilderness journeys offers one of the cheaper options to get the coach and site ticket as one purchase. $99AUD return.

Food and Shopping

Salamanca Market
@claralindsay
Salamanca Street Markets, found on Salamanca Place are open every Saturday from 8:30am - 3pm. A wide range of farmers market produce, clothing, gifts, and food stalls make it a great place to spend the morning. I would recommend Pocket curries for lunch, as seen in 3rd picture!

Delicious Malaysian food with lots of vegetarian options too. Great prices, the tables fill up quickly so takeaway is always an option!
